The truck I am converting is 1990 the drivetrain comes from a 1988 both have same body style (xlt ext. cab 2.9L-5 speed). I switched speedo cables (2wd cable was way shorter) and I am trying to figure out how to wire in the manual transfer case and tranny so when I shift into 4wd the light behind the dash works (I noticed the bulbs and wiring is all there when I removed the instrument cluster to switch speedo's) and the other sensors on the mits fm146 trans. I carefully combed the Haynes electrical diagram with no help on the 4wd lighting circuit!! So there is some confusion on my part about how to trace the wiring :icon_confused: . . . I already have the engine crossmembers switched and bolted/welded into place and mounted the front axle . . . just some last minute electrical buttoning up before I throw in the engine and tranny/t-case and mount the drivelines and fire it up.

why did you change speedometers? the speedo will indicate the same thing regardless, the only thing that changes the speedo reading is the gear in the transfer case, not the speedo itself

he may have ment the speedo cable? i know in my F150 it reads out the transfer case witch would be a longer cable needed to reach it then on a 2WD with it just going into the tranny

Yes it was the cable itself that was switched.

there is a connector by the steering column that isn't used on your 4x2 chassis, it's either plugged or open, it is only 2 or 3 wires or there's 2 connectors, it's part of the cluster of connectors on the drivers side inner fender... anyway, it's just that wire going to the transfer cases connector... your best bet is getting that from a junk yard off of a gen 2 truck.

One more thing how do I wire in the neutral sensing switch that is on the top plate ? I don't recall the 2wd 5 speed having it in that same location . . . I believe it was on the side . .. not sure though . . .

two wires, both pale blue, one with a black stripe.

on all gen 1 and gen 2 trucks it's a seperate "harness"

you'll need one off an 86-88 (1983-85 used a different switch, and '89-up used a different connector)

AllanD-Are those wire colors in reference to the t-case 4x4 sensor or the neutral switch ?
