2019 Ranger Ecoboost Oil Change Interval

I have a lawnmower that's had the same oil in it since the mid 90s. I've been meaning to send that sample to them but write in the vehicle as a 2020 Bugatti Chiron just to see what they say in the comments...

Turbos are hard on oil from everything I’ve read and this particular trip probably ran the Mobile 1 Synthetic pretty hard. I tried the Truck/SUV blend this last change.

The color still looks pretty good. A light brown color. The oil only has about 3,500 miles on it since it was changed in May. So, we’ll see.

Worth noting... there are differences in the different Mobil 1 synthetic formula's. For a 2019 Ranger Mobil 1 recommends the following, listed in order of performance, as shown below.

Interesting. I’ll have to check if Valvoline does a similar listing since I tend to use that brand as much as Mobil 1.

What oil change interval are you using?

I asked this question in the "Oil Change Process" thread.. but I'm thinking a dedicated thread makes more sense.

These motor's aren't our old school normally aspirated motor's. The turbo's and the gas direct injection (GDI) makes oil change intervals less. A buddy of mine has a GDI turbo charged Audi and his mechanic specializes in these motors. On his Audi he changes the oil every 3,000 miles.

My truck has 3,300 miles and the oil has barely even started to change color.

At this point I'm thinking the best plan is that I will rotate the tires and change the oil every 4,000 miles?

What say ye 2019/2020 Ranger owners?

I bought my Ranger in July and just hit 3000 miles. I am going to do the first oil change at 4000 miles and then every 5000 miles after that. I have had some bad experiences with Ford dealers doing oil changes because they have kids doing them and have had some bad things happen. I am going to Ford and buy the oil and filter and then have my mechanic do the oil change. It might cost more but I will be able to loosen my lug nuts when I have a flat. I won't need a new oil pan after 100,000 miles and numerous other things kids do when there in a hurry. I will keep my receipts in my Ranger maintenance log incase I would have a warranty claim. I really wish I could just let Ford do the work but have been burned too many times and plan on keeping this truck for 200,000 miles.

You can buy motorcraft filters anywhere, don't need to go to dealer for that. And Ford doesn't make oil, they buy it from a refiner...... same as any of a jillion other brands. Might be possible to figure out who branded their oil, might not. Anyway a good quality oil should be fine of any brand.

As long as you are doing oil changes at or more frequently than the manufacturer recommends using oil that meets their specifications, they can't void your warranty. As long as you have proof it was done. I don't think there is any kind of limitation on the filter but going with a Motorcraft one isn't a horrible idea. There are plenty of quality filters made as well, if not better than OEM.

Ford oil is made by Conoco to Ford's specs, most major brands also meet them. I personally won't use Pennzoil, Quaker State, or Oilzum, if I don't buy Motorcraft I'll use Valvoline or Mobil. Generally I go to the dealer and fill my jugs from the bulk system because they still treat me like an employee for some things. Write the oil changes in your maintenance chart in the back of the manual in case you need documentation but there won't be a question as long as it's changed often enough- In my opinion at least twice a year regardless of miles.
Warranties don't get "voided" often or without definite cause- flood or fire, sold as scrap, something major. One component's coverage can be cancelled but it also has to be for cause and well documented. A dealer denying coverage is sticking his neck out and asking to be sued, I always got our FSE involved if I thought something was questionable and let him decide coverage should be denied.

Maybe flawed logic on my part, but I think it's a wise move to buy the filter from the dealer, just so they have a record, for warranty purposes. I keep all the receipts for the FoMoCo filters and the Mobil 1 oil I buy at Walmart, just in case I ever need them for warranty.

After the warranty is up though you can bet I'll be buying WIX filters.

All you have to do is keep receipts, no matter where you buy them. If the dealer is reasonably priced and convenient, then good enough. But there's probably ten places I can get a motorcraft filter that are closer than the nearest dealer. Or any other brand for that matter.

I don't know if motorcraft filters are better than anything else, but I have a socket-type 'wrench' that fits over the end of an FL1A, so that's what goes on the 97 for convenience. The Mazda 3 had a motorcraft 910s filters on it when I drove it off the lot new, figured that was good enough so have used it on that car ever since

Magnuson-Moss warranty Act (I think, not sure on spelling) is federal law and protects you from having warranty voided by aftermarket parts.

FWIW I use to run regular Mobil 1 in my duratec and while my samples from blackstone at the time were all good and within typical spec, when I switched to Pennzoil ultra platinum my wear levels in copper and iron decreased noticeably in every sample since.

Not trying to make a case for Pennzoil but in my instance it would seem Pennzoil is superior to Mobil. At least ultra platinum vs Mobil 1.
