2011 Ranger XLT 4X4 - "Business Casual"

Not really sure what that thing controls, but I'll fix it anyway
HVAC controls. It holds vacuum so they still work when there is little or no engune vacuum. Should be a check valve between the manifold and the reservoir.

But, a vacuum leak isn't good anyway. Could be affecting those idle trims.

I shoved some vacuum caps on the breaks for now. Grabbing a piece of splice tube to put a patch on it as well.

I'm fairly sure I hear another vacuum hiss somewhere as well. Going to hook up the smoke machine as it's annoying.

You would think a vacuum leak would set my trims positive. Hm.

Such is Cologne life...

🙂

Notes for myself, mostly:

All parts changed between 190k and 192k mi to prep for supercharger upgrade:

Injectors
MAF sensor
TPS
Knock sensor
Serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler
Plugs, wires, and coil
Switched oil to valvoline restore and protect 5w30
Transmission fluid changed - Royal Purple Syncromax
Cam chain tensioners
O2 sensors
4wd working again
Ran compression test (ran incorrectly, one plug at a time, but data is data.)

Truck is acting like it is "young again." Fuel trims corrected from a consistent +1 to +4 to -3 to -7. Mid range power and throttle response greatly improved. Bank 1 and bank 2 fuel trims are running consistent to within 1% of one another. I feel confident it is in the best shape it can be for its age to handle mild boost (famous last words). 🙂

Well. I put the new diff cover on, and made some unfortunate discoveries.

Said diff cover:

Noticed on a long drive the other day that my diff was scalding after a few hours. Sprung for the mustang cover to help.

The good news is that the Ford diff cover definitely keeps your axle running cooler.

The bad news:

I need a diff.

Starting to step back from this thing and wonder if it's worth it to keep going with it.

Ping issue still has not gone away. Any time this thing is under 2500 RPM and you're light on the throttle, it pings lean like crazy. Already changed out maf, all egr components and sensors, ECT sensor, metal thermostat housing with new thermostat, plugs, wires, coil, fuel pump and filter, and a few other things.

Hitting the point where I'm weighing my options between keeping this or trading it in on a gladiator or Tacoma (I will NOT buy an auto, sorry (not sorry) Ford).

****.

Huh.

I should probably check on my diff. These photos were 6 years and like 80k mi ago. Hasn't given me any issues since I put the limited slip in.

Meh. I've seen worse excuses to change fluids.

Well. That's probably not good.

Rubber boot around the shifter.

I have a core shifter installed. Fluid is light brown and smells faintly of atf.

I'm guessing it's just cook off from the fluid.

Need an expert to chime in.

I say just worry about what's in the gearbox. The transmission vents thru the shifter hole so IMO what you are seeing is something like PCV fluid stuff that your aftermarket boot caught.

Magnet looks normal to me.

If you don't like it, replace it with a non-magnetic drain plug. Ignorance is bliss. Just ask 95% of the drivers out there on the roads.
