The 97's with the newer 6 cylinder, were known to have problems (F series), but the old 6's they replaced, were dependable, but known as oil leakers.
The old Fiesta's were Rabbit based, but not quite sister cars. While the Festiva's were Kia Prides, with Mazda powerplants, with the exception (every rule has one) of the Shogun ones.
I agree about the Contour and the Mystake, but Tempo's, which predated, them, had both good and bad (know one that is still on the road and quite dependable). If they swapped the transmissions and fixed the DPFE (if I remember correctly), problems, they might have had a chance. Similar things with the Escorts (early ones had issues, then they get dependable, are that way for a couple of years then change).
Windstars, well, isn't that the one with the rear axles breaking, or is that the Freestar (later version)?
Talked a "kid" out of trying to buy an Edsel station wagon, from a customers estate, behind the shop.
Seen too many cars to think any are dud's. Some of them are just plain ugly (think Aztec), some have design issues (some headlight replacing comes to mind, where they redesign after only thinking about assembly line design), others have what I call "early design" issues (unforseen problems that get worked out over the next years then become dependable), but overall there are so many factors that when one has a good one, one wants to change, normally due to wants, rather then needs (driving till dead).
