Who wants to explain to me?

You can't give citizenship to property. Remember, vast majority of our law is based on precedent. The Supreme Court ruled against Dred Scott (and all Blacks) in 1857 and essentially legalized slavery in the entire nation. The abolitionists didn't like that one little bit.

And theoretically, not even the President is supposed to be able to overrule the Supreme Court. ha ha

So then what? It needed changed reguardless, apparently the Surpreme Court was as clueless as the south on the subject.

Was it really the industrial revolution that would have put the slaves out of work or was it the absence of slaves that brought about mechanized harvesting of cotton? If you don't have to pay someone to do something, you won't exactly be very inclined to buy a machine to do it...

Absolutely. 5 of the Justices were from slaveholding families. Can you say Bias?

The point is, the way our country is set up, laws go through a process and at times are deemed to be constitutional or unconstitutional. If you want to change a law or precedent ( hmm...Roe vs. Wade?) then you need to do it through the proper channels. Not just disagree with a ruling and then do what you want anyway. Society doesn't thrive very well with disorder.

The South BASICALLY said, "We have the Law in our favor based on this, this, and this. You are ignoring the law of the land and we no longer wish to be united with you in this Union. We want a divorce cause yo ass is cheating."

One of the biggest problems with the current set of "leaders" is that none of them seem to give a rats ass about the basic foundations of this country.

The Industrial Revolution was on its way regardless. Even slave owners had to compete. Whats faster, a slave with callouses so thick their fingers have no feeling left, wishing the could kill the guy with the bullwhip, or a machine that never complains and rarely has to take a break. More product to market means more market share, lower prices and higher net profit. Plus the Industrial Revolution got its start in European nations, where slavery had long been looked down upon. Competition is the mother of invention.

Believing that slaves were routinely whipped was also as much a part of abolitionist
propaganda as the idea put forth in the french press during WW1 that Imperial
germans liked nothing better than bayonetting babies.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" is about as factual as the Harry Potter Novels.
It belongs on the same Bookshelf as "Mein Kampf" Mao's "Little Red Book"

PROPAGANDA!

Slaves were EXPENSIVE property, which is why relatively few people owned them.
on average a slave was worth at minimum three to five times what a really good horse was worth and that's some pretty serious coin... and you'd think they'd whip them just for
amusement?

Horses cost hundreds
slaves cost thousands.

Horses are a royal PITA to maintain compared to an automobile
Why on earth do you think early (primitive) Cars were so quick to be adopted?

slaves more or less maintained themselves. and excepting that they weren't
free to leave certainly ate better then those left behind in africa and certainly
had greater life expectancy. the diseases that are common in africa are scary...

Please don't get the idea that slavery was right, but frankly I have african
american friends who I grew up with and African-African friends who I've
known for decades and none of them are unhappy to be HERE.

My friend Emmanual (works as a corrections officer) once commented that
the ONLY thing he missed about africa was that it was easier to get goat
meat there. other than that there was NOTHING he missed about his native Ghana.

another friend born and raised in East Orange NJ commented after His trip to Nigeria
"Africa? I've been there. What a phucking shithole! You'd have to put my ass in chains
to drag my black ass back there!"

Not politically correct, but there you have it.

I'm not sure if this was meant tongue in cheek and sarcasm, but I want to address this statement.

The Deceleration of Independence states that *ALL* men are created equal. Not that just US Citizens were. Considering the fact that they were brought here against their will (I assume that), they should be granted amnesty and made citizens protected by the bill of rights (something we're about to see on a mass scale).

I'm 1/8 Choctaw Indian, hell if anyone has a right to bitch it would be me. Hey, I like air conditioning, horseless carriages and clean water. You won't hear me whining about past history, let's look forward people.

the declaration of independence is nice "prose" but it isn't the constitution, not is it "law"

the constitution is LAW.

the declaration of independence ws written almost entirely by
Thomas Jefferson, a slave owner... if he planed to release his own slaves based on the declaration of independence it certainly took him long enough...
(and in point of fact most of his slaves were SOLD upon his death to cover his debts)

Factual history is a real BITCH when you are discussing ideals isn't it?

Of course its tongue in cheek. Once again, remember the time. Blacks weren't "men." Just like a horse wasn't a man. They were beasts. They were property and treated accordingly. Today's definitions and points of view are quite different the they were 200-300 years ago.

Not particularly in my opinion. I guess it all boils down to whether you believe in the Declaration of Independence and what it stands for or not. Regardless of whether I'm "legally" bound to follow it is irrelevant to me, I consider myself morally obligate. Again, I know that my morals are not "law", but our country was founded on those beliefs, the fact that Jefferson owned slaves has no bearing on my morals or my beliefs. I can't second guess the framers opinions or what they were trying to say with certain documents, I do however know what I believe to be fair, and that's what has gone so awry with this country. Nobody respects the other and thinks their beliefs are superior to everyone else's.

Well that and the lottery, which is over $250 Million for the drawing tonight, I gots my numbers!!!

The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was big freaking money. Most of the slaves were captured in Africa by warring/competing tribes. Not by a white guy with Khakis and pointed mustache. The Khaki guys just chained them in a boat and brought them to market. Like cattle. They had to justify the whole mess somehow. That justification was that blacks weren't humans. problem solved.

I have lived in the South all my life and no matter what you have read Hatred and Prejudice are alive and well and growing.I have heard stories all my life from from friends about their Great Grand Parents feeding baby's to the pigs because of they had deformities and couldn't be productive.
Uptight Old White guys coming in with "James" to load their batteries in their trucks. They are in starched shirts and "James" needs a trip to Goodwill for some threads.

I do not care how many degree's you have in History the facts of life over rule them.
I have to agree with a previous post.........The stars and bars are flown for way to many wrong reason's than for the people that died carrying it.

But what do I know................Just another dumb ass Hillbilly that lives in it everyday.

First and foremost, I'm halfway through a bottle of vodka while I write this.

That being said, I have quite a few opinions on the freeing of slaves and the confederate flag, almost all of which would be best discussed in the tailgate section. I had a point to finish this with but for the life of me I can't remember it. Hopefully I'll remember when I'm sober and there's a similar topic in the tailgate forum.

Yeah. I've got one word word you: BARBEQUE!!!:drool::drool::drool::drool::drool::drool:
