What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

EMS couldn’t stitch up that metal before they left?

🙏🙏🙏
EMS doesn't do stitches. They do gauze and tape and splints.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to having a vinyl floor. I'm not looking forward the the installation. Everything I'm seeing, it's a S.O.B. of a job but I won't have to worry about staining or salt getting encrusted in the light grey carpet anymore.
@sgtsandman I haven't forgotten about this.
Floor is STILL hanging over the tailgate of my trailer.
If the weather cooperates I'll get some pics for you on Wednesday

Thanks. Mine is sitting in the box in the garage. I probably won't get to it until next spring, once it gets warm enough for the vinyl to relax. Any pictures you can provide will be appreciated.

And it may have been a shock when you discovered it, but just take a shower and put on some clean clothes, and just go step-by-step and it will all seem like a distant memory in a day or two.

Or you'll be like Rick a few hours later.... What memory???

Today I... didn't do much. Really. Didnt; sleep for shit last night, that would have required falling asleep before 1am which I didn't manage, then staying asleep until 4am when the alarm goes off, which I also didn;t manage. Fortunately it was a slow day at work, not much to do. Got to get in a few naps at my desk. Get home and not enough energy to tackle much, but got to stay awake so I'll sleep tonight. So sat on my backside catching up on youtube and the forums. Welp, that bed is calling now, hopefully I'll actually fall asleep when I get there.

Tomorrow I'll hopefully be a little more productive. Work will probably be about the same (minus the naps hopefully). Then either home or to my parent's house. Home to work on cleaning out/up the F-250 to hand off to my BiL. To mom's to see about getting the inverter generator running.

Had dad's bigger 3500w generator out at the hunting club this past weekend because it was the only one I could get running on short notice (literally pulled the chord and it fired up). It's overkill for the situation, heavy, and loud. He's got a smaller 2000w quiet inverter generator that would be plenty for pulling the window unit and maybe microwave down there, but I couldn't get it to fire. Got spark, and getting fuel to the carburetor. Not sure if it's getting from the carb to the cylinder, and didn't have time to dig in yet. If it is the carb, I've got to decide if I'm going to spend the time trying to glean it (or money getting another), or if I'm just going to run over to HF and pickup a new one with a 3 year warranty. Wouldn't be bad to have one at my house to run fridge and stuff in event of power outage.

Two obvious checks to make for the genset: 1. Does it have a choke? Did you use it when you tried to start it? 2. Does it have a separate kill switch that might need to be turned on to allow the engine to run? I have a genset and it has both a choke with a lever and a kill switch.

Got up this morning and spent a pile on upper control arms from RicksRangerz for the green Ranger. So hopefully in about 2 weeks I’ll have them. Which means I have one week to fix my frame (this week is FUBAR already).

Yesterday I moved vehicles. Mom’s Explorer had a dead battery despite being on the charger a couple days ago so it will probably need a new battery. That went up by the house. Moved dad’s Ranger down to the shop so I’m in range of my torches to try and get the fill plug out of the rear differential so I can put oil in it. Of course when I moved it I heard a squeaky squeaky echoing down a hollow tube which tells me the rear U-joints are toast so the fun continues. Then I found that 4x4 isn’t working in it either. Like I need more stuff that’s not my own to fix…

How old is the gas and how often does the generator get ran? I've found that power equipment that is allowed to just sit with fuel in it without being ran atleast every 3-4 months for at least 20 minutes (preferably under a load) become a real bear to get started. This is even if the fuel has been cut off and the carb has been allowed to run dry.

The guys at the camp have the same generator that I do at home and they just let it sit. It's a real S.O.B. to get running. Meanwhile, I'm able to get the one at home running pretty quickly. I won't say it will start on the first pull but it does start after less than 10.

Yes & Sorta to all of the above.

This is one of those plastic encased inverter generators, so you don't directly interact with the carb. It has an off-run-choke selector knob on the control panel. I tried both with and without the choke.

How old is the gas... Not certain

It has one of those filter screens and I can't say if there was any gas in it when I started messing with it. What I added was fresh. I pulled the side cover to check spark (it sparked) and look things over. When I opened the bowl drain on the carb it seemed to be fresh fuel coming out of the drain tube. Can't say if it sat with old gas at some point prior. Generally speaking dad didn't allow stuff to sit for extended periods with fuel in the tank.

How often does it get ran... No idea

These were dad's and I never messed with them. I can fix the stuff but he was the family's small engine guru. I rarely had reason to borrow that kind of stuff and can't say I've ever used a generator myself before this past weekend. Couldn't tell you which ones he had running and which he was working on.

If you feel so inclined, perhaps a can of either might be what is needed. Get it running and let it burn whatever residue is in there out.

If that doesn't work, you may need to pull the carburettor and hit every hole you can find with some carburettor cleaner. It could just have some clear varnish buildup inside, causing your issue. I've had to do that a time or two with improperly stored small engines. Most were self inflicted.

That was actually going to be my next step when I get back to it in a day or two. Did the other quick checks, but didn't have any starting fluid handy when messing with it the other day.

I was mostly stating the plans, not really looking for help, do appreciate the input though. i know how to fix the running side of things, the inverter side might be a different story if it is an issue, but got to get it running first.

Got to make the decision of if it worth fixing and how much money/effort to put in. I guess it is worth fixing and storing properly even if I do replace it. Someone will want to buy a running generator next time a panic hits. Every time we get a hurricane or bad storm system forecast to hit they disappear off the shelf. You'd think that with so many being bought everyone would already have one. Actually they probably got several that don't work because they never needed to run it after the storm passed and don't know how to fix it.

Anyhow, mom went out of town for a few days with my grandma and aunt (her inlaws), so not going to mess with it today. Looks like I'm heading home to mess with the 250 instead.

I would try starting fluid, I have two older Champion 3500w generators that when they sit they need a little nose candy to start for the first time then choke is enough... as for why two, first I've had for a decade and I found an identical one for $25 so couldn't pass it up... both run fine.

they need a little nose candy to start

LOL Wouldn't have thought about it that way, but I suppose it works. Gas engine coke

Pretty certain that is what I've got at the hunting camper right now. Know it's an older Champion, I think it's 3500w.

I think it (the Champion 3500) was running earlier this year and dad was using it around the house, probably used it for running a 110v chainsaw further out in the yard than extension cords would allow. I know for certain that it was sitting untouched since before dad went into the hospital in June. Few weeks ago I decided to see if it would run to use at hunting club since it appears to be most recently used. Applied the choke, pulled twice, and it was running.
