Unanticipated performance improvement

I thought it was weird that Ford offered a 3.0L and 4.0L at the same time. I really don't even understand why the 3.0L replaced the 2.9L when Ford already had the 4.0L.

So they could justify charging more for the 4.0 is my guess.

I suspect everyone who says the 3.0 has decent power lives in less hilly terrain than I do, that's great if it works for you, the 3.0 was a good engine after the first 2 years. In 1986 we had piston slap trouble with 3.0's and replaced a bunch of them, in 1987 we had a ton of broken off shore head bolts.
I live in Tallahassee Florida, also known as the Land of Seven hills. We have hills al over the city, sucks for us "3 pedal guys" . Mine was a 2001, way after the issues you named, but my only issue was getting a clutch replaced and that wasn't even really an issue.

i know it im really out of shape i drove up to tallahasse im in jacksonville went for a walk cant go two blocks without needing a break!

I never understood the point of the 3.0, and even the 4.0 to an extent.

The 2.3 made sense to have as a 4cyl, but for the larger engine Why not just use the 3.8/4.2 ?

Would have sure made V8 swaps easier for everyone later down the road lol

Well, we have hills, and y'all have all the bridges you can fit into the Largest city in America.

3.8 & 4.2 are 90 degree Vs, much wider that the 60 degree 3.0
that also makes for different Noise, Vibration, Harshness

EDIT: upon further review, Roert42 appears to be referencing the 4.0, not the 3.0
both are 60 degree engines.

Ford also decided that one 3.0 wasn't enough so they built a completely different 3.0 Duratec and used it and the 3.0 Vulcan at the same time.

My 90 degree V8 is easier to service than my 60 degree V6 was.

Ford has shamelessly done MUCH worse themselves.

I have a 4.2, but it's a V8 and makes 300 HP. Kind of crazy considering it's parked in front of my 4.0 that only makes 160 HP.

same situation here.
the 3.0 in my Taurus SHO is 220hp, and revs to 7400
that engine was 89-95 right beside the Vulcan.

er,, I mean way behind the Vulcan

I've never been there so I can't compare the terrain. I should probably have called my area mountainous.
