timing question

aaaaaaahhhhh...that's what I said a while back...mine did the same thing...would not start til I rotated it...sounds like you're almost there...I PM'd you about the search but didn't do it when I checked this forum...

Let us know what happens after you get the rad hooked up...

well today after i got everything hooked back up it fire up and smoked and didnt run more than a couple of seconds and i had to floor it to get it to.and after that i took the plugs out and they are full of gas so its still not getting a blue spark at the plugs isent that why it is smoking white? cause its burning off the gas and also theres gas in the oil can that be something bad or just the gas seeping down there due to it not firing.

When you floor an engine that is not catching you're bound to flood it...you may need to try turning the dizzy a bit one way or the other...and air those plugs out and let the cylinders dry up a bit too...that gas can both seep into your oil past the rings and also (as I think I mentioned) work its way into your muffler...there it becomes either dangerous or costly...or both...because it can result in your muffler blowing up (more out than up, actually)...

You may still have an issue with the dizzy...you should either get a voltmeter or take the wires to a shop where they can test them to make sure they are the right kind and proper resistance...

now, you did say that you cranked the engine with the cap off and the rotor was moving, correct?

If so, check the little metal tab at the top of the rotor...gently bend it upwards a fraction of an inch and replace the cap...that is what actually connects the coil to the plugs...as it spins...if that is not connected properly it will result in weak spark...

ok i got it to start up and run and the dizzy has to be turned counter-clockwise all the way to run but it puts out a lot of white smoke it will idle but idles very rough and sounds like a fourwheeler i think its burning the gas off the plugs but i still cant get a blue spark i moved the dizzy one tooth clockwise and counter-clockwise.and still no blue spark only red.the cap is brand new the rotor is brand new the dizyzy if fairly new the coil is new and i switched wires and still no blue spark any idea?and ill try to bend the rotor up a bit tomorrow

if i could get a blue spark it would probably fix my whole problem

and since it is getting a blue spark at coil but red at the dizzy does that mean its something with the dizzy?
and if i got a volt meter what would i need to test? and can you give me a link to one thats not very costly but will do the job?

You might try disconnecting the cat it kinna sounds like the exhaust is plugged up if your getting fire it should run. If you smell fuel on the dipstick dont run it you sitting on a bomb. I went to help a guy get his sand rail running with a corvair engine and dumped a couple gallons of fuel out the block. rebuilt the carb and filled it with oil but didnt air it out good it blew the oil cap almost all the way through the garage door strait up. It ran pretty good after that. You can take a hair dryer and blow a bunch of fresh air through it for a while before you add fresh oil. fill it with oil and crank on it with the coil disconnected to prime the engine with oil first.

what do i need to do to change the oil?drain it then open the cap and use a blow dryer to dry it the fil with oil?and what could i try to get a blue spark do you know?

When you say switched plug wires you mean you put new ones in I hope. Also have you fully charged the battery a weak batt will give you a weak/no spark condition also.

and also i took the coil of my 88 ranger with a 2.9l and it runs so the coil wire is good and put it on the 2.3l and still got a red spark at the coil does the coil give the dizzy spark? or does the dizzy has its on spark along with the coil?

It is best to charge it overnite on 2 amps slow charge will give you the cranking amps.

If i take the coil wire off at the dizzy and put a plug in it is red but i i disconnect the coil wire at the coil and just hold the wire close to it it is a blue spark what would cause that?

Do you have a timing light if not your gonna need one when you get it started. Put it on a slow charge get new plug wires while it is charging. Do the slow charge while you get the stuff together there is no sense starting it now without a light you will never get it right.

Ok i have bought a new coil, new dizzy cap and rotor button.the dizsy is fairly new.I get a blue spark at the coil and a red at the dizzy and plugs it will start up and run if you take the plugs out and clean the gas off of them. And when it runs it smokes a lot of white smoked which smells burnt.and it idles very rough.and you have to have the dizzy turned counter-clockwise all the way to get it to run i have tryed to turn it a few notches both ways and it will only run on one notch and the dizzy turned all the way counter-clockwise.

and yes i charged the battery all night and was working on it today

but which would i need?a timing light or volt meter the all the timing marks are lined up excalty.
