Things I miss on vehicles

While numerous things newer vehicles have make them more reliable and handle better, some conveniences were sacrificed.

One was seal beam head lights.
Never had hazy plastic lens or leaky headlight assemblies.
Lamps were easier to change than many bulbs are now.

Another I really miss is front door vent wings. They provided significant air flow inside that one piece roll down windows don't.
Beat heck outta running ac all the time.

Vent wings was my first thought. Sealed beams is way up there too.

Bumpers. Real ones.
Kind that don't dent, bend or break when push another vehicle.
Didn't even scratch the chrome, if you were careful.

Not really, I don't have a vehicle new enough to be missing those.

SAE sealed beam headlights suck and always have. Bosch, Cibie, GE aircraft landing lights, Hella or Stanley E code headlights are far better. All use replaceable H-1/4 bulbs except for the GE aircraft landing lights. Marchals with the fox logo and yellow bulbs were fun for a minute, but got too much attention.

I found out that running A/C with the windows fully closed actually saves fuel, especially when driving on the freeway or highway. I used to love driving with the windows open, until gas got to $2 a gallon and I started to really care about fuel mileage.

I miss only four digits in the cost in dollars on a new vehicle's window sticker.

And, vent wing windows.

Dad had trucks with them but I have never owned anything with vent windows. Honestly my truck moves air great with a side window down and the rear slider open. Very nice breeze from the back window without being too obtrusive.

The issue I have is when I have a passenger and they also open their window. Then there tends to be a rather violent crosswind thru the cab. That is why I added A/C.

Sealed beam suck, I converted my truck to H4's and never looked back.

I miss climate controls that used levers and cables. They always worked. They didn't get stuck in defrost mode if they got a vacuum leak. There wasn't any clicking or banging of vent doors from a solenoid issue.

I don't think newer vehicles are more reliable. I think they just cater to lazy people.

My ‘92 had vent windows. With both windows open and the vents closed you get a lot of air whirling around in the cab.

If you opened the vents at just the right angle it would change the airflow around the truck. Could do 60 with both windows down and it wouldn’t be any different then doing 15 or 20.

Could rest my arm on the window while driving in the highway and my cigarette would be perfectly undisturbed.
