Theoretical max effort A4LD build

Im looking at purchasing another 87-88 turbo coupe, my last one was a 5 speed. I wont be leaving it stock: filter, 3" turbo back, 18lb of boost, ported upper and lower. I see some automatics for sale but i know in 87-88 the a4ld was that cars biggest weakness. After doing some research it seems i could do some proactive mods to the trans to help make it last until i could afford a "built" a4ld or a c4 swap; shift kit, cooler, adjustable modulator valve and was thinking a converter but haven't seen any specs about torque multiplication out there (dont want to stess it even more) for the stock converter and hughes isnt open until monday.

I priced out a c4 conversion with a custom converter, it would be bullet proof but very expensive and no od or lockup. So ive been researching building the a4ld. From what Ive gathered id want to start with a later 4.0 6 cyl trans. 6 clutches vs 5 low, int., and direct. OD drum still only has 3 clutches, is there a way to change that? Can the 1 solenoid valve body be used on the 89+ trans? Looking for tips, info and first hand experience. Car will weigh 3600 with me in it. 32-3300 stall high str, 3.73 or 3.90 gear, 225rwhp but want to spray a 50 shot so 270rwhp max and alot of torque. I will be mostly putting on easy street miles but i will take it to the track several times a year. Is this even remotely possible or should I just buy another 5 speed.

These are the ideas i have so far

• Hughes 9" 3300 stall
• 1993 A4LD
• Transtar master kit
• Cryo treatment
• TCI 300M input*
• Trans cooler
• Transgo jr
• Adjust. modulator NTP-66820M

*Input for a 5r55, 21 spline, would it fit?

Welcome to the forum

A4LD was used up thru 2011 as the 5R55x, so it was a good transmission or Ford wouldn't have stuck with it for 26 years

It got a bad rep in the beginning because this was the FIRST OD transmission most trans shops had EVER SEEN, so they "went to school" on it, and failed alot, lol, and as with many they blame the design not their own uneducated workmanship

Good read here, it is older but some good info: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/a4ld.shtml

Not sure on the input shaft?
