speedometer noise and jumping

So at about 55 my speedo gets really noisy and the needle jumps around 15-20 over actual speed. any suggestions? thanks! '94 2.3l 5 speed.

Is it the speedo head thats making noise or the cable Iam betting the cables bad and winding its self up in the out housing, I dont know on your year if you can pull the inner cable out form the bottom and grease it but it will only take a few minutes to pull it and see

Yes, '94 still used a mechanical cable from trans to dash.
One of the strands in the cable has broken, so it binds then releases, causing the jumping of the needle.

Usually replacement is the only option
