Soon to be newbie owner...2007 Ford Ranger S/C 4.0 SOHC, 5 spd MT, 4x4

Hi all,

Just in the process of buying a telephone company fleet work truck at auction. This one has about 112K miles. It’s been worked, but in pretty decent shape.

I will be asking for advice on what fluids to change, etc to make this track last.

Also, what are the main “hot spots” to look for on that later 4.0 litre SOHC engine...

One thing I haven’t figured out is if the post-2002/2003 SOHC 4 litres still have that four timing chain arrangement and issues with chain slap(?)

Welcome!! I dont know the particulars on the two 4.0s but check the tech section as it will gibe you that type of stuff

The later 4.0L SOHC is essentially the same same as the early. They both have overhead cams and require two timing chains to drive the cams.

The early versions had some design problems with chain guides and tensioners. I think by MY04... updated components had been installed from the factory. So an 07 should be OK. However... those parts are only as good as the maintenance that was done. Regular oil changes go a really long way with these engines.

We consider the chain tensioners a maintenance item with 100k as the change interval. So if you're unsure if they've been changed... you should put them on the to do list.
