sasdranger's SAS thread

that diff and the original engine crossmember where the rac and pinion steering junk was bolted added much more support than you would believe. im not an engineer either i just know that a crossmember there is very important to control the torque of the motor. some square stock of a good thickness 3/16" or so would be fine i would like to think. you could tuck it close enough to the oil pan to where it does not limit up travel for when you go to coils. plus it helps protect the oil pan from rocks or whatever.

fine by me, I'm in no hurry by any means.

I'm kinda in a hurry, but the sever lack of $$ is really holding me back lol.

I'm tempted to just say screw it, put a front shaft in and get matching gears in the 9" and go wheelin... but somethings gonna break and i don't have a tow rig yet.

What exactly do you want? the back hangers, leaves and my shackles?

what we did for the front was a little c-notch in the frame, welded in some 2"x.250 DOM and pressed the bearing into that.

well he did add that square tube at the front where the bumper should be. Is that not enough?

it is 2x4x.250.. i'm pretty sure i know what he's talking about, once i get a welder i can make something that goes in there :icon_welder:

Yep exactly those parts. Thats a good idea just pressing the bushing into the frame like you did. This will all be going under this Bronco II I have with a D60. If its too much a pain to cut your rear hangers off the frame its no big deal I'm perfectly capable of making my own...I'm just looking for some waggy springs and since you don't want to use yours anymore I figured I'd throw the offer out there.

they do flex out nice..

the hangers are coming off one way or another, its just gonna be one more thing to get hung up on.

Nice build. I like the work. It seems to go that way inevitably. Build, drive, hate, take apart, rebuild, repeat.

Thanks man.

the scary part is.. I'm just getting started :icon_surprised: now that i'm starting a job finally after graduation things should come together pretty quickly.

i dont think the section of channel is enough but thats just me. because if you look at how beefy the original engine crossmember is compared to what is on there now. plus that channel is too far from where the torqe stress points are from the motor. on every truck ive ever seen the cross member is directly under the motor mounts to control that torqe. im not trying to be a dick but i just think it would be important to have a crossmember there to prevent any future problems. frame twist is not a good thing.

i'm still listening, and i think its a good idea, i was going to do some tube type of skid from about the radiator back to the t-case at some point as well.

once i get a welder, and modify mid-cross member i'll see what i can do about the cross member under the engine.

on the origional setup there was only a cross member/drop bracket crap where the rack and pinion was, and that was just behind the radiator. the back mounts for the LCAs were just things welded on to each frame rail with nothing in between like the pre 97 trucks have..

yep. i just cut all that junk off my frame. im using the brackets that the diff bolted to that are under the motor mounts for my new engine crossmember. im just going to make it out of square stock and weld it in between those tabs.

i think the motor mounts are even on the frame, so i'm just gonna weld something in there directly inline with the mounts.

2 of them are over in automotive, i also had Korey neumeyer :icon_confused: dunno how to spell it. but he should still be over there, he knows his junk but is kinda the "its my way or there's no good way" type.

all of the instructors saw my truck though

how do you like it? what are you gonna do for a project?

i have cory and rick i forget his last name. i completely agree with you on how cory is. he's constantly criticizing me. i wish i could've had eric paul as an instructor, he's a bad ass

your truck is looking freakin sweet i've seen it around town a little bit but not since the sas

i wanted to do a project like your doing but ran out of funds cuz my engine blew up on the way here. as far as my project i'm building a tubular chassis for rick. it'll be a 68 chevy pickup with a corvette suspension

yea EP Ca-ching was over there the phase before i got there, and i guess he came back the phase after i was there.

I'm back in texas now, i left in the middle of october.

I hear ya on the money.. college living. I still had money laying around from my wreck, about 90% of 2 monthly checks went into it, and every pay check i got went into parts along with a little borrowed from the parents.. lots of little things here and there really add up quick.

I got good at living on a small amount of money. ramen, dollar menu from mc donalds.. lol

Hitching rides from anyone and everyone to get to school and work really started sucking though.

i figured i would put a little update in here for anyone reading over it and hasn't seen my other thread.

I got a Ruff Stuff Diff cover for my D44.. I would recommend one to everyone.. its the cheapest after market cover out there and its already paid for it self a few times..

I welded up a winch plate with some bracing, as well as hacked apart the header panel and core support to squeeze the winch in.. but it fits :biggthump

and i put a rollerless fair lead on.. seems to work really good, and it doesn't stick out any farther than the grill which is very nice..

I had Kevan (badkarma) make me a square front drive shaft, i gave him a drive shaft off an old chevy/jimmy, he cut the ends off and welded some 3/16" wall square tubing in.. braced both ends, has solid stock on the inside thats been drilled into from the outside and welded up.. its not going anywhere..

Somewhere in there we half-ass dove tailed it.. I'm going to fill in the area up with a spare tire, hi-lift mount, re arrange the cooler situation so i can have 2 at the back easier to get to..

And since i ripped out the front output shaft on my t-case, i found out the axle went down too far for the driveshaft and made the t-case the slip joint :dead: so i got some 25" Beard/Red Art limit straps, they seem to have served their purpose, i didn't break the t-case on my last trip.

I still need to redo the rear spring perches cause their all caddy wompus, springs are doin funny **** and the pinion angle is all jacked. Then I need a traction bar. I may just do like 4" lift springs and do spring under, which will allow me to get more up travel w/o the pitman arm hitting the springs.

and heres what it looks like as of the last run out.

And I just put this order in.. Only coils/7º caster bushings and extended radius arms then a few days of work and I'll be sitting on 4" lift super flex bronco coils.

I know you have'nt posted anything on this for a while but I always look this up for reference on my sas. I've decided the best route for me now on my steering is to do the same setup you did with your draglink. I ordered my heim joints and spacers but what did you use to make it thread into the dom tubing? I can see that there is some kinda thing that you welded to the ends but I havent run across it yet while looking for parts. And man you need to get back on here sometime and give us an update! Love the truck and the thread. Its been my how to guide on a lot of stuff. Thanks!
