Just a quick question. Will the stock 4.10s in my ranger bolt right up to an explorer carrier in the 31 spline 8.8?

yes, they'll swap over, but they dont just "bolt in". you need to check the backlash/pattern

Reuse the shims (or new ones the same spec) that came out of the axle they are going into, should get you close.

Still gotta check it though.

That will be a good starting point, but it won't be right. The backlash is stacked clearances of the housing, the carrier, and the gears. Change any one of those things and you change the backlash.

It is better that shooting from the hip though.

With Ford gears it will usually get you really close.

Yeah. It will get you close. And it is a heck of a lot better than shooting from the hip. I was just trying to reinforce in the OP's mind that it won't be good enough.

I'm probably gonna buy an install kit. I have access to all the tools to set everything where it needs to be. I've helped a few friends with gear swaps before. I've never done it myself, but I have the basic ideas and people around me for help.

Thanks guys

a case of beer and a pack of steaks is cheaper than paying someone to do a gearset.. :icon_thumby::icon_thumby:
