Okay so I finished my v8 swap on my 2000 Ranger 4x4. Swapped a 5.0 in for the 3.0 and used an m5r2 tranny.

First gear is unnecessary on the street, and in 5th I can accelerate up steep hills no problem, and with more power than the 3.0 could even downshifting to 3rd. With the 4.10s it turns pretty high rpms on the interstate and my mileage sucks driving over 70.

So I'm thinking swapping some 285 75r16's in place of my old 245's would be fine, and I probably wouldn't notice much of a power/mileage difference.

My truck should fit the 285s with a small torsion crank. Anyone have this same setup? Recommendations?

I'm running 275/55/20 (32") and I could easily run a 33, probably could go with a 35" on flat land, in the hills, might have to drop a gear. But you would be on with 33s...

33s sound good to me. With the 4.10s and a 5.0 it's pretty easy to burn rubber with my stock tires.

285/75-16 tires are actually 32.8" tall, so if your current tires are 245/75-16, they are 30.47" tall.

So the bigger rubber would net you 7.6% increase in gearing.

if you kept your current tires, and went to 3:55 gears which are common to a bunch of rangers, and therefore easily available, you would raise the gearing 15.5%

if it were my truck, and being used for mostly street without any heavy 'wheeling, I would look at the explorer/mountaineer 5.0 vehicles, figure out what RPM they turn in stock form at 60 MPH, and try to get fairly close to that.

Then, you first gear should be useful again, and your highway RPM's will be reasonable, as you have indicated they are fairly high now.

your call......

Looks to me like I can get to around the same rpms the stock explorers run by either re-gearing to 3.55 with my stock tires, or going with 33's and swapping in 3.73s. With just the 33's and my current 4.10s the rpms would be about 225 higher than stock explorer/mountaineer at the same speed. With 33s AND 3.73 they are spot on. Hmmm... the 3.55s would get better mileage....but then the 33s would look nice...and if I ever swapped to 3.73s I'd gain more mileage....Decisions decisions...

I would put on a body lift and 35s :) it would look good and gearing would be about perfect
