Pulling Out Clutch?

You may have seen my previous posts about getting the fitting that is stuck in the slave cylinder out. Well now I've tried about every reverse drill bit, and easy out that is even remotely small enough to even think about using. (also broke 3 drill bits :lame:). So I'm about give up after spending a couple hours under the truck trying to drill that sucker out.

The other option I have (my only option left) is to drop out the clutch. What would it take to do it? (1987 ford ranger). What would I need to also take out?, how long would it take?, what else should I do while I'm in there? Please Respond. Thanks a bunch.

I am assuming you are talking about removing the trans to get to everything easier. You would have to remove both (assuming 4x4) driveshafts, remove transfer case (assuming 4x4), remove shift linkage and shifter, remove the starter and make sure all 6 bell housing bolts are removed AND make sure the small screw holding the shim plate on is removed. On your back on the floor? Probably will take you 3 hours or so to get it out.

I would replace, while it is out, the clutch, throwout bearing, pressure plate, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, Resurface/replace the flywheel ($60 - REPLACE IT), and the rear main oil seal. May as well replace the input shaft bearing on the trans as well. Wish I had.

In other words, replace everything that may break soon and make you yank the trans again.

Very well stated.

at least that one is easy. 93-97 clutches are a pain bc you have to remove the exhaust to get the tranny out. and if you havent had your exhaust off in 100k miles it isnt that fun.

Nah, you pretty much have to take the Y-pipe off the manifolds to get the trans out on the 83-88 too. It's possible to get it out without taking the exhaust apart, but it makes it so much easier.

So did I the first time I pulled my trans last year. I had to get the y-pipe out with the trans already half out, so I was working around the bell at all sorts of stupid angles. Got 3 bolts out, and took half a day on the 4th. Finally got the last manifold bolt out, looked at it, the bastard was bent!!

No wonder it wouldn't come out. It took me a breaker bar, a swivel, and 3 foot extension, 2 hours with my big impact gun and some "adjustments" to the pressure regulator on the compressor to get it out.

I shoulda taken a picture of that one before I threw it out.
