Project SVT

Next time you do this, put the drill press in reverse, while spinning in reverse pick up your center punch with the drill bit, while holding the quill down on your work piece, clamp it, then put the drill in forward and drill your hole. That way the drill wont cut the center punch mark before you want it to and it will locate better.

Looks good, I like the way you are going with this! Keep it up!

My press don't have reverse, otherwise I would have...Everything else is what I did to center it....drilling the first step with the 3/16 was dead on every hole, it walked when I step-drilled it...If I have time tomorrow I plan to weld the endcap on the case...If it warms up friday I will drop my 20 from my 77 bronco and get the spud shaft and main gear so I can get the measurements and send the shafts off to get them machined together...

im pretty sure you cant wled the cap on the end of the 1356 case...

http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=940873

FYI, the only thing the jb weld does is seal up the block off plate, you could run RTV there and it would work just fine, as for welding it that would be great, thats how the other kits I make get there block off plates mounted up.
But the BW-1356 is magnesium ( spelling?) and yes the block off plate is made from 6061 alum so here is the thing, I have tig welded a "LOT" of mag thrue the years and weld alum all the time, but I have found no info or rod to weld the two together. so my feeling is after years of making doublers for the 231,241,1350 cases and talking with 100`s of customers that have jb welded thoes kits and I have "NEVER" had one guy call and say they should have welded it like I told them, it just might not be a big deal.

It can be...I saw on another forum (explorer forum :icon_confused:) where someone was attempting a 1356/1356 doubler, and said the same thing...then another member posted a pic of his that was welded...its pot metal aluminum, hard to weld to, but possible...

there will be one with all of them firing shortly! just got to grab moms video camera tripod and get my camera out... plus tons of other pics...

That was a while ago, John, and I changed some stuff on it and added more lights. Besides, you can't really see them in that vid...You can never have enough lights :D

Well, I have the case in the shop getting the endcap welded, waiting for warmer weather (yeah right!) so I can get to my bronco and drop the dana 20 case so I can get my spud shaft and main gear that I need and have my intermediate shaft made. I'll be getting the other plate I need for the reduction box sunday, so next week I can start on that. I still need to get up to the metal supply shop and get me a piece of 4 inch pipe.
I also updated my first post to include all the mods I've done to date to make it easier for members and newcomers to see all that has been done without going through 20 pages of reading. I still have to install my hydroboost setup (waiting on hydro hoses) and my custom remote reservior built by Iron Ranger (again, waiting on hydro hoses), which hopefully will be soon :icon_thumby:

Doubler is on hold, most of the parts are at the machine shop so I don't have any parts to work with...Hopefully next week I can start rolling again

Well, time for an update...After a $h!tty long weekend and an even $h!ttier time after I got back home (which I thought was going to be good to get back to my life) that went totally wrong and unexpected (Go figure :annoyed:) I did manage to get my rear pinion angle corrected from where my axle tubes spun. I didn't get a whole lot of pics, camera person wasnt around to take them as the fabwork happened...

I still need to fix the driveshaft from the previous owner (thinking of building my own with some slightly bigger joints :D) I also got the rest of the materials for my doubler build and I got word the case is done, so I need to go pick up the case sometime in the next 2 weeks ( its 2.5 hrs away) get the cases finished and get a final measurement so I can start machining the intermediate shaft. I'm thinking of setting up my own spline cutting machine so I can do that in-house and have it done faster since that will be the last piece of the build, well, except for the driveshafts :icon_thumby:

Well, its been almost a month, but I finally got my tcase back from the machine shop. I can't complain, cause they had a few hot jobs that took up a lot of time, and it was done in their spare time, (IE FREE!!!) Anyways, for those that say BW cases can't be welded, here ya go!!

doubler060.jpg

Because of the high magnesium content in the case, as soon as the puddle starts to cool, it pops, so getting the puddle/weld to hold can be time consuming and tricky. This is why you see cracks on the back side...Since it will not be a structural part, I'm not worried about it, it's just to keep the fluid in the case...I was surprised to see that they sand blasted the entire case, so I decided to wash the case ( had sand on the inside), air-dried it with compressed air, then painted the case. Since it didn't get that warm today (about 50), I let the paint harden overnight, and start on the adapter plate tomorrow.

I also did a little work on my mounting plate, cut the excess edges off. Sometime next week I will get a 4" holesaw and cut the middle out. Here is what it looked like last...
doubler057.jpg

And what it looks like after...
doubler062.jpg

The edges are not perfectly round, but I'm not too worried about that. Since I couldn't do too much work on the case, I also started fabbing the brackets for my sliders. I got them finished, but I didn't get a chance to attach them to the frame. Got called away to get my fire truck from the shop. County just bought my station a truck, and before I get it in service it has to go in for repair :annoyed: Anyways, here are a couple pics from the brackets, the hole in the middle was there when I got the material, will have to fill it in for my plans...
