Project B2R


Not much so far. The housing is narrowed, gears are back from cryo treatment, my chromo axles and joints will be here tomorrow. I got my knuckles back on monday from getting them reamed, pressed all new spicer ball joints into them. Trying to find somebody to set my gears up right now. The guy that normally does my stuff moved away, and we have only two local shops that do gear set up and I don't care for either one of them.

Thought your dad had a shop? You guys don't do gears?
 
He does have a shop but no we don't do gear installs. It's something I want to learn how to do, just don't feel like dropping $500+ on the tools to do it at the moment. I've done lots of lunch box locker installs, replaced bearings and crush sleeves, but never fully set up a axle from the beginning.

I do gear installs all the time, and dont have super expensive tools to do it. A magnetic base/dial indicator, and some sort of method to remove/install bearings are all the tools (other than basic hand tools) that you need. Its definitely a skill worth learning/having.

And a beam style in*lb torque wrench. Either way, not all that costly. With the amount of people afraid to do their own installs, you can make your money back very quickly.
 
The tools you can't do with out for diff set up is a carrier bearing puller set which is around $300, a good dial indicating torque wrench which start at about $200, and a magnetic base dial indicator at around $50. So yeah, $500+ in tools. I can borrow the last two tools, but I've pulled carrier bearings on and off without a carrier bearing puller, it sucks.
 
I have a carrier bearing remover, but you can also just use a press and splitter if you have access to one.
 
Yeah, a splitter and press works. A $60 in/lb beam torque wrench is fine, don't need a dial one.
 
Decided I didn't want to waste any more money on the 8.8 doing the Super 88 upgrade, so now it's up for sale and I'm building a 9". One step forward three steps back.
 
I'm having stupid luck lately selling things. Already sold the 8.8, got a $1000 for it today. Time to get some 9" stuff on order.
 
Been working on getting the 9" housing all cleaned up and trussed the last few days. Housing is out of a 79 Bronco.

Made my own truss. The piece that stretches over the top of the housing is 1/4"x2" flat bar and I plated it in with 10 gauge.

A local shop is only charging me $125 to narrow and true up the housing so I'll be dropping it off either tomorrow of the next day for that.
