Project B2R

Ended up not using the housing I trussed. Shop that I had narrow it ****ed up and only narrowed one side:annoyed: So I called up Currie and ordered one of their extra heavy duty housings with .250 DOM tubes. Showed up today and pulled it out of the box to find this.

Apparently somebody dropped it somewhere. Not only that but their machine shop guy forgot to cut a stop in the bearing end for the axle seal to seat up against. So now I have to wait for Currie to file a damage claim with UPS. I'm going to try and talk them into just sending me out another housing so I can move forward. I'm about ready to lose my mind at the lack of progress I've been making.

That's what, like 1/2" steel? Did they drop it off a building?!

No shit right? When I told the guy at Currie he had a hard time believing it.

Anyways, I have been doing a few little things in the mean time. Set up my first set of gears, a 9" is a good thing to learn on I'd say. I'll get to the specs on the 9" later, but here is the gear pattern I ended up being happy with.

I also mocked my front axle up and found that my steering wouldn't clear the Ruffstuff diff cover. So I notched the cover and plated it back in. Have about 1/8" of steering clearance and about 3/16" ring gear clearance.

Excellent! Setting up a drop out style diff is a good place to start. Nice when you can just throw it in the vise and go to town!

Yep, the 9" pig is a good one to work on. Drive looks awesome. Pinion looks slightly deep reading the coast side, but you made a good decision. Run it if your BL is in spec.

Shitty deal with the housings man. Frustration meter must be maxed out.

I thought it looked a little deep as well. I had a better looking pattern on the coast side at one point but the drive side didn't look as good so that's what I went with. Next I'll be setting up the D44, shouldn't be too bad since I made set up bearings and bought a set up pinion race.

Dana axles are a PITA IMO. haha. Setup bearings/race are a must for me. I built a case spreader too.

Hey man, I changed up my project cause I wanted to keep my ranger nice. Ended up with an 86 F350 crew cab with a 429. Building a crawler, low and flexy so next summer were gunna have to hit mcgrew and stuff

For your first setup that pattern looks quite decent. Shitty deal about the housing, hopefully they make good on it for you; and in a timely manner.

Talked to Currie this morning. They're going to just build me a new axle and ship it out so I don't have to wait. Even after the pics I sent him the guy couldn't believe somebody actually bent the housing end like they did.

Well I received the new housing from Currie the week before last, but have yet to make any progress. Been busy as hell lately. Sold my diesel superduty and then picked up gas superduty for cheap to get me by. I have all next week off but am in the middle of a 16V 1.6 swap and front axle regear on a buddies samurai. I'm going to try and at least get the rear axle hung under it and get the spring pads welded up before I have to go back to work.

So yeah... Dana axles suck lol. Finally got around to the gear install on my D44. Been messing with it for a while today. Here's the last pattern I ran.

Drive looks a tad shallow to me, the B/L is .007". The guide I'm using specs B/L to be anywhere from .006"-.010". What do you guys think?
