2000 FORD RANGER — DIAGNOSTIC HANDOFF2WD • 3.0L V6 • Automatic • October 24, 2026SYMPTOMS AND CODES
☑
Rough idle, poor acceleration and shudder previously reported around 35–40 mph, with apparent failure to upshift.
☑
Latest drive stayed below 25 mph; driver reported a slipping sensation in first gear.
☑
P0351/P0352/P0353 remain present.
☑
P1131 returned after the latest drive.
☑
P1401 previously present; did not return during the latest reported checks.
☑
Raw-fuel smell occurred briefly after running. Source not identified; smell later disappeared.Transmission failsafe, internal transmission failure and PCM failure have NOT been confirmed.POWER AND ENGINE-SPEED CHECKS
☑
Coil red/green supply, key ON and coil unplugged: approximately 11.86–12.64 V on separate checks.
☑
Coil red/green supply, connector plugged in and engine idling: 14.38 V.
☑
Battery voltage during latest cranking test: 11.28 V.
☑
Scanner engine speed while cranking: 210–215 RPM.
☑
Scanner did not provide PCM supply-voltage/VPWR data.COIL-CONTROL HARNESSResistance checks performed with battery negative disconnected, charger disconnected, and PCM and coil connectors unplugged. Our A/B/C labels identify wires; they are NOT Ford’s coil-letter designations:
☑
A — tan/white → PCM 26: final result continuity.
☑
B — tan/green → PCM 78: final result continuity.
☑
C — tan/red, possibly tan/orange → PCM 52: final result continuity.
☑
Approximately 0–0.2 Ω recorded during successful end-to-end checks.
☑
All three maintained continuity during harness wiggle checks.
☑
A–B, A–C and B–C: OL with both connectors unplugged.
☑
Each control wire to the disconnected negative battery cable clamp: OL.
☑
B → PCM 52: OL, as expected.
☑
Key ON, PCM and coil unplugged: all three control wires measured only millivolts—approximately 12/10/7 mV. No short to power detected during this check.Earlier conflicting OL readings were superseded by successful continuity checks. Terminal orientation and probe contact caused confusion; an AI-generated illustration initially marked socket 78 incorrectly. These checks found no complete break or detected short in the three control wires. They do not establish terminal grip or performance under operating load.COIL PACK
☑
Direct primary resistance from the common power blade to each of the three control blades: 0.5 Ω on all three.
☑
No open primary winding detected.☐ Coil performance under operating conditions remains unverified.COIL-DRIVER PULSE CHECKSetup:• PCM connected.• Coil harness connector unplugged.• Fuel-pump shutoff connector unplugged.• Regular incandescent test light clipped to battery positive.• Tip applied individually to each coil-control terminal during brief cranking.
☑
No visible flash on any of the three control terminals.
☑
Test light verified bright directly across the battery.
☑
Cranking RPM subsequently confirmed at 210–215.☐ Lamp current draw and suitability were not independently measured.☐ Scope confirmation of driver operation remains outstanding.PCM GROUND INVESTIGATION
☑
PCM unplugged, key OFF, battery connected for bulb checks.
☑
Test light clipped to battery positive, fine probe used at harness sockets.
☑
Socket identified as 24: strong, steady light.
☑
Socket identified as 25: no light; comparison with 24 repeated.
☑
Socket 25 visibly contains a metal terminal.
☑
Socket 25 to disconnected negative cable clamp: approximately 15–18 MΩ reported/measured.
☑
Suspected firewall ground ring removed and cleaned.
☑
Both probes on the cleaned ring itself eventually measured 0.0 Ω, establishing contact on that ring.
☑
Socket 25 to that ring: OL or very high resistance, approximately 50–56 MΩ.
☑
Exposed solid-black wire looked intact.
☑
A nearby blue/silver splice or shield was observed; black wire did not join it.
☑
Attempted rear-crimp test was inconclusive because reliable metal contact could not be established.IMPORTANT: Socket 25’s ground remains SUSPECT, not conclusively diagnosed. The suspected ring was never positively established as its ground endpoint. Socket identification and terminal contact require independent verification before repair.WORK PERFORMED
☑
PCM, coil and DPFE connectors cleaned.
☑
Coil terminal C appeared mildly dirty before cleaning.
☑
Limited PCM harness loom opened for inspection; no confirmed wire break found.
☑
Vehicle subsequently reassembled and driven briefly.
☑
No PCM replacement, coil replacement or confirmed wiring repair completed during this test sequence.TBD — TO BE DETERMINED☐ Verify exact PCM terminal identification using the correct vehicle wiring information.☐ Confirm socket 25’s terminal, crimp, wire routing and actual ground attachment; repair only if a fault is established.☐ Verify ALL PCM power feeds and grounds under load, including voltage drop during cranking.☐ Inspect PCM and coil terminal grip, corrosion and seating with correctly sized adapters.☐ Scope all three coil-control signals and evaluate primary current/coil operation.☐ Establish the cause of persistent P0351/P0352/P0353 before condemning the PCM.☐ Diagnose P1131 after addressing ignition faults; evaluate fuel trims, intake/exhaust leaks, fuel delivery and oxygen-sensor response as indicated.☐ Check transmission fluid level using the correct procedure, fluid condition, leaks and transmission codes.☐ Determine whether the reported slipping is transmission slip, engine misfire/power loss, or both; perform pressure/ratio checks as indicated.☐ Exhaust restriction has not been confirmed or ruled out.☐ Battery condition and any parasitic drain have not been fully resolved by these checks.CURRENT CONCLUSIONThe three coil-control wires passed the completed static harness checks. Coil primary windings measured equally and were not open. No visible coil-driver pulses were observed during cranking despite an RPM signal. A possible PCM ground-path problem remains unresolved. These results do NOT yet justify replacing the PCM, oxygen sensor or transmission. Further road testing was stopped because ignition faults persist and slipping was reported.
