"Old Blue" was my first (and only) new vehicle I ever bought.

1992 Ford Ranger XLT 2wd Supercab 4.0L 5-speed

I made it to 395k before needing to replace the trans, I was still on the original clutch. I bought used trans off ebay, and while I had it apart I put in a new clutch. Still had plenty left on the old one too.

I had never done ANYTHING to the engine itself outside of plugs and wires.
Outside of the normal wear/tear stuff like tires/brakes/exhaust/hoses, I can only think of changing out this list in 20yrs of ownership:

Transmission, alternator, starter, power steering pump, pas-side suspension mount, fuel tank sending unit, radius arm bracket, heater fan, and ECU.

The last few years there were oil leaks a plenty around the oil pan, but didn't burn any oil.

Old Blue had never left me stranded, ever. Never in 20yrs did I have to call a tow truck. I may have limped home, but I made it there.

Once I replaced the trans myself thanks to THIS FORUM, I thought I just might make it to half a million miles with the old girl. She wasn't pretty, the hard Wisconsin winters made the cancer of rust an ugly fact the last few years. I never had her in a garage in her life. She was tough as nails. 500k miles was in sight though, and that was my goal.

And this week it all came to an end. Going to work one morning as usual and I believe a head gasket blew. Within seconds of wondering what was going on and trying to get to the side of the highway with smoke billowing out, nasty sounds started coming from the engine. Horrible sounds. Like grinding marbles.... :-( Don't know if a rod disintegrated or what, but I knew then and there this was most likely the end.

She went until she couldn't go no more. But she crossed the finish line and made it past half a million miles. Rather than dig that deep into a potential fix at this point, it is time to let her rest in the big junkyard in the sky. The things she has done with me, and the stories she could tell over the years make me shake my head and smile.

I'll never have a truck as dependable and long-lasting as this one. This truck has outlasted everything. Outlasted every girlfriend I've had, every dog I've owned, every place I've lived... Only my parents have been around my life longer than Old Blue.

Very sad.

Goodbye old friend.

Why good bye BF? I'm sure it's more appropriate to strip her bare (hea hea) and use the parts on another RBV! Don't toss her aside just cause the motor FINALLY died. I mean gezz, that many miles means you take good care of your stuff and hell, get all the parts off her and let her live on for many more years!

damn looks like you guys had a hell of a good run, here's to another half million in your next one

Sad, but so awesome! You have to save something off of it, if it goes to Blue Oval heaven.

I'm going to save the shifter knob that has been worn smooth from my hand. Also saving the blue oval from the front grill.

The interior is still nice, no torn seats or cracked dash. Problem is anything on the exterior. When I've been to the yard sourcing parts, every junker ranger's parts seem to be in better shape than mine.

20yrs of Wisconsin's salty winters made everything exposed to the elements turn into rusted goo.

A trip south of the snow belt would be worth it. We have tons of rust free RBV's that go for sweet $$$! Got my 93 with 107,000 miles on it for $1,500.00.

Got to know what kind of motor oil and how frequent did you change it? Oil filter brand as well? I guess its time to buy another and go again. I'm in south central TX and we have no snow or salt ever, so like the above poster, ride the bus down and bring a rust-free ranger back home for another run. Love these stories... did it have a 6-digit odometer that shows the 504 or did it just roll over 5 times?

I think 92 or 93 was the last year of the 5 digit odometers, so right now my truck says only 04,710.4 on it. I've watched it roll all zeros all five times, and thanked her each time for the faithful service.

Almost all 20 yrs I've used synthetic Pennzoil, and a variety of filters, changing every 5-6k.

Several times in the last 10yrs I've dumped in some Prolong engine treatment too. Not sure if that made any difference or not.

I'm really surprised at how sad I am about this. It is literally like losing close friend you've known for ages.....

yeah i think 94 was the 1st year of the 6 digit odo? i could be wrong tho...

Haaaa haaaa...good bye you trusty bucket of rust. Here is a short poem I wrote for you and the ride of a lifetime..... 'What a ride we had...and 'twas so sad...that you finally had to go...Those roads we traveled on with out end....but you would always linger on.....like a burning candle in the wind'.

I fixed a '92 Toyota Camry not too long ago, insurance wanted to total the car, it had 330k on it. The guy ended up paying to have it fixed himself because Toyota told him if he made it to 500k they would buy it back from him (for what price, I dunno). The car really didn't look that bad for being 20 years old and 330k.

Maybe you should call up the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI and see if they'll take it in :icon_rofl:

I know how you feel letting a good old truck go....I had a van 20 years/raised 3 kids in it...get some good pics of Old Blue for memories!
