No worries...sometimes we make suggestions at these points and it really can go either way...If I say replace the cat and it doesn't fix the issue then the O2 sensor does...or something else. There are quite a few situations where there is no right answer and biting the bullet and making a guess is all you can do. I hate to be the one that influences wrong approaches though.
Try searching for O2 sensor test...that might give you a way to determine if the sensor is working or not. A mechanic who knows his stuff will know what to look for and shouldn't be suggesting replacing parts without proper diagnostics.
This thread talks about it but I didn't see the actual test method...
ok went and picked the truck up. spoke to the actual tech that was working on it. what he said was the cat had been hollowed. i put a towel over my hand and did the test u told me on the pipe. and i saw nothing leaking out from the cat. he said pouring out. is there a way to generate smoke i could see comin out? i found a muffler shop that will do the cat for 180 out the door.
$180 out the door is good...including cat and labour I would say go for it...
The only smoke test I know is to add Seafoam to the intake via vacuum...it will give you so much smoke that you won't know what to do with it...and you should see leaks if there are any on the exhaust system...only problem is when there are more than one leak and you can't see it right off so the whole area gets smoked.
Good to have a strong fan to blow the smoke out of the way if possible but it will give you the idea that the system is not sealed...most of the smoke will come out the tailpipe and it has a bit of a stench to it that is not conducive to good neighbor policies...lol
Best to do that test away from residential areas...just put a bit in a cup and put a manifold vacuum hose into the cup and let it sip it in...using a cup helps to prevent too much going in at once...providing you use a small hose to limit how much is drawn in.
That indicates carbon burning off the engine surfaces internally...
You can dump the rest of the can into the gas tank and let it burn off...some people use it regularly to help keep the engine clean...I did mine just before I sold the Ranger so not sure if it did any good...won't hurt from what I've read.
As it's been a while but I figured I should offer some closure I replaced the O2 sensor with the correct one and did a mission and I passed with flying colors no issues whatsoever thanks for all the help and everybody else I'm sure I'll be back on here with more problems but just wanted to say thanks
