Question?

I have a 1988 Ranger 4x4 I had a rear brake cylinder fail replaced it now this problem. The front disc brakes work good but the back wont work. I tryed bleeding them pump the brake but just a trickle comes out each side almost nothing. I jacked it up put in drive hit the brake the rear tires keep spinning. If I pump it quick it will stop hold for a few seconds than the tires start rotating. All was fine until my left rear brake cylinder failed blew apart had to drive it home 45 miles. What could be the problem?

that sounds like a cloged line or a blown master,

when holding the brake does the pedal solwly travle downward, if so the master cylinder needs to be replaced.

Yes when you hit the brake pedel it goes slowly to down ward to where the front brakes work. It stayes off the floor 3 inches there is just no back brakes at all. I bleed both back brakes but not the front ones fronts work good

Sounds more like the RABS valve is clogged up.

You can replace it with a small piece of hardline and some fittings to get rid of it all together. That's what I did.

How do you do that? where is the RABS located at on an 88 Ranger? The front brakes work good but no back brakes. I did not bleed the front brakes as there working fine. I tried bleeding the back ones open the bleeder nothing but a trickel comes out no air I can see. You pump the pedel it goes down slowley to where the front brakes work. What do I need to bypass it? and where its located? It would be great to have full brakes again

those things are always "clogging"
to test this a little, i would disconnect the fitting right at the master cylinder and see if you get a good stream. hook it back up then remove the fitting from the RABS to the rear and see if you get the stream there as well.

Thanks Guys

As soon as I figure out where the rabs valve is I can go to pick and pull rob a few off the same year Rangers. I seen a few posts its under the drivers area on the frame hope its the same for the 88 Ranger

It's inside the driver's side frame rail, towards the front under the floorboard area.

What about the possibility of a fried flex hose on the rear? Those things decompose over time and it might be the culprit.
