My turbo'd 5.0L'd 4/5 dropped 2000 Ranger

Running errands.

Been a lot of ups and downs. With the new converter, I blew HARD through my 6300rpm soft limiter and wanged off the hard limiter at 6500 pretty bad a couple times until I got things set right.

Well, that caused a pretty gnarly top end tick. I was sure I hurt a lifter or the like. I don't remember if that's when it started missing or not though. Yea, and it started missing at low speeds.

Anyways, nothing wrong with the top of the cyl heads, I didn't pull the intake to look at the lifters. I did bore scope the valley and they all are present, lol. I also bore scoped a couple cylinders and found some UGLY exhaust valves (pic is #4 exhaust). Now I was convinced I was buying heads (cuz im not putting money into gt40p's). Decided to do a compression test, and found the #6 spark plug gap smashed in. Not sure when or how that happened. The compression test came back fine. Not great, but totally fine. 125-140psi.

About this time, I got absolutely fed up with the hvac box.. I realized a while back that the ac wasn't going back in this thing, so, I ripped that mofo off a few days ago. I'm currently working on blocking all that off. 3d printing some mounts for things right now, like the Mac valve for the boost control and a big wire hanger for that mess of wires now dangling there.

On the bright side, with the hvac box out of the way, my bad tick was nothing more than a huge exhaust leak at #3.. I would have sworn my first born that there was no way, and it was definitely a mechanical tick.

Also burnt up another couple plug wires. Spent a ton of money on parts for that, still working on that.

Anyways, even on apparently 7.25 cylinders, at 15 psi this thing is stupid fast. These tires hook up amazing now that it has warmed up, and at 75 degrees they flat grab. It'll put you DEEP in your seat. I haven't bought a dragy yet, but another gps app put 0-60 under 4sec, even with a slight bog at tip in.

Absolutely LOVE the torque converter. It's in a good place. I can foot brake and build boost easy now (the tires so far aren't happy with that, though).

I bought Kevlar socks for my wires. They work good.

I have dei heat wrap stuff on them already, still burning through. Only thing that has worked well is ceramic boots. Still slowly deteriorates the inner silicone grommet though.

Maybe I should try a different heat wrap though.

Nice Ranger!

I recognized the username from long ago.

It's been taking 20psi for a couple weeks now. Again, back at being out of injector. I don't know why it hasn't blown up yet. Everyone says it shouldn't be taking this abuse.

see.....FAFO timeline.

dont worry. you are merely scaling data points to add to the FAFO scale.

what was the ring gap? over 30?

it's whatever it is at 200k miles, lol. didn't do anything to the short block... well, i needle scaled off the rust and painted it.

If you had more traction, you’d have more load, which might result in 💥

Shouldn't change anything? I'm controlling boost closed loop..

it does hook up eventually, just way way way past 60ft.

and i don't put 20psi to it at 3k rpm, it ramps in.. I'm not smert, but I ain't dumb lol. I'll post my boost control table next time i get a chance. heck i can post whatever anybody wants to see.

impressed. you dont have the common 200000 outof 205000 great engine..... you have the super awesome 200000 out of 400000 engine....

Boost target map.

so that's only ~16psi at 3k.... It doesn't spool quite that quick though. Especially without a trans brake.

I give a lot of credit to running e85, but my understanding is the gt40p heads are known for lifting.

.0065 per inch of bore rule of thumb on boost when you push it. 200 k is pretty well worn and likely why its working good. at those levels with so much use it really is impressive. if you put new rings in or get a fresher short block take the time to gap them. just pull it apart ... gap... reassemble. going past 10 psi regular its a good idea

For sure. I didn't do a leakdown but a compression test showed good numbers. I did plan on gapping the rings initially, but just decided to send it.

The next iteration I'm split on. Definitely won't be another stock 5.0 block build though. I've got a stock bore C9OE 351W shortblock sitting here I could build. It should handle 1k to the tire relatively reliably. More with less reliability. I've got a 460 sitting here. Probably won't go that route.

To go 9.5 deck I'd likely have to redo the hot side. Crossover for sure, all of it most likely.

Or I could just buy an aftermarket 8.2 deck block and my hot side would bolt back up.

so I'd be spending money, probably similar money, just on different parts.

I've had this c9 shortblock for a long time and I'd really like to put it to use though.. argh.

I'd also like to front clip this and go to a strut or mustang 2 front end..

bobby, did you ever read "the grenade" thread on theturboforums? It was kinda my inspiration.

hot side should be pretty easy to just mod the drivers side piece as long as you maintain good drain angle for the return oil.

that is why i like those marengo clamps or whatever the fawk they are called...they are like v bands. easy to put flex or mod sections in.

really nice thing about ls truck manifolds....stupid easy to mod.
