I have a 2004 Ranger with under thirty thousand miles on it. It started to make a clanking sound somewhere underneath. I inspected it and it sounds like a little piece of metal that is flying around my bell housing, or gear box. I don't know what is making this rattling but it seems like something broke off in there. does anybody know what it could be?

My buddy Ben had his do that at 60k, a 2001 with a manual. It turned out that the gear had broken in two. Shortly after it started rattling it began to pop out of 3rd. Pulled the tranny and replaced just that gear, fine ever since.

My 92 was making a similar noise and did they same. Although its prolly a different tranny I would check you transfer case input shaft bearing mine tore up and was doing the same if its 4wd that is. If not check the flywheel bolts as well mine had somehow came lose and snapped off. Must be all that 160HP that did it lol. Good luck man.
