I would like for the users to discuss the vairous attachments for these two important shop items.

The Bench Grinder and the Angle grinder.

Some of the most valuable tools in the shop. If you got a grinder, a cutoff tool and a welder you can make just about any tool.

I'm in the market for a new Bench Grinder and have seen some awesome accessories.

So if you needed a 6" Bench grinder and a 4.5" angle grinder what accessories would you get for each?

I know MANY people replace one stone on their bench grinders with a wire wheel.

I know people usually get a cutoff wheel and a flap disk for the angle grinder. Some get the diamond wheels that cut like butter.

So I am REALLY thinking about purchasing the Multitool belt grinding attachment: http://www.vansantent.com/multitool.htm#review

I know folks with belt grinders swear by them...and I just don't see a need for a wire wheel on a bench grinder, just use the angle grinder with a 3" cup wheel and clamp the part in the vise.

for an angle grinder:
flap discs
cutting wheels
grinding wheels
one of those wire wheels if i could find one to fit mine

bench top:
i have 2 grinding discs on mine right now, but i'd like a wirewheel and a buffing wheel for it one day.

for an angle grinder:
flap discs
cutting wheels
grinding wheels

Agreed, and adding a decent face shield, respirator, and hearing protection hot metal slag in the ear sucks.

Having two angle grinders is nice, especially on large projects, one with a cutoff wheel and another with a flap disc or grinding wheel. Not only does it save time but it helps keep the grinders from burning up.

Could someone recommend a good brand? I always thought Makitia made good angle grinders, I dunno anything about bench grinders other than no-name cheapo's..... I don't want Harbor freight quality.

I've got a Makita 4 1/2" and it's great, but any major tool brand should be fine. A while back I saw Bosch had where you got 2 grinders, a diamond wheel and 4 cut off wheels for $80 or so.

look for the H.P. rating on the bench grinder.....the 1/3 h.p. grinders will stop turning/bog down easily.....

Is this for a hobby or a business? I'm a hobby user so I buy cheap and in multiples. I have eight 4.5" grinders, three 5" grinders, and a 7" grinder, none of which I paid more than C$35.00 and most under C$20.00. Some are put away for when one craps out.I also have two 8" bench grinders, one 6", and a combo belt and disc grinder, again not paying more than C$40.00. This way I can have one of each type of wheel; wire, grinding, flap, buffing, cutting. Some of these tools are brand name but used, other are off-brand cheap HF or PA. If I was doing this for income, I would be buying the best I could afford, probably a step down from snap-on. The under powered bench grinder I find are good for wire wheeling hand held bolts and small stuff and for a very fine grinder wheel for sharpening drill bits and chisels/knives.

t figures that a guy in Red Deer would by "cheap" (LOL< Hi Richard, LTNT)..

The big thing about bench grinders... (IMO) is they are ALL underpowered, SO, for the 3 that I have, (one is store bought) the other two are a mandrel, 2 pulleys and one heck of a motor in each,

Grinder A) 3 hp 3450 rpm, blower motor mounted under table with two huge 12" stones

Grinder B) 2 hp 1750 rpm enclosed motor, again, 2 pulleys and a mandrel.

the first is grinding, the second is brush and buffing wheel

the store bought is for "junk" (small stuff).

both of the homemade ones the motors came from the scrap yard, the rest of the parts about 40 bucks each, the the two huge 12" stones are from a comercial outfit, about 50 bucks each, (I haven't changed them yet, and that was 14 years ago (yes I do a lot of bench grinding, the stones are that good)).

Well, I come by my cheapness honestly.... I'm part scot, english, french and metis.
And I also use the mandrel and belt drive;

as well as re-purposing an old table saw shell.

i've had a 4.5" dewalt angle grinder for almost 10 years now. still going strong. only bad thing is the handle, it wont unscrew from the grinder anymore, so it's permanently stuck on the left side.

i tried a skil grinder from lowes and that thing was a POS, so i returned it.

you get what you pay for.

more toward hobby(hate that word btw)

I work on my own vehicles and have a one car garage with LIMITED space!!

I just barely have room for a grinder stand, among the other things taking up space(two work benches, shelf with chemicals, welder, floor drill press, cherry picker, air compressor, bar stock, panneling, a wood stove, and I need to find room for a plasma cutter! all the while being able to drive a car in there!)

So I can't store up on the cheapies, don't want them! My dad has two CHEAP 1/3 HP "Chicago" bench grinders, hello vibration even without the wheels on!

You should truthfully wear a full suit of armor plated steel and/or be a knight of the round table. Last month my Uncle was life flighted to Giesinger because a cutoff wheel exploded and proceeded to lodge itself in his chest....
