Got my NEW bronco a couple of weeks ago runs great everything still works---but got a real loud lifter noise after running it for awhile.. not a problem----this is the problem ---found a supposedly 1988 motor ( mine is listed as a 1989 but was manufactured in 1988) and tranny on graigslist advertised as a 1988 ---BUT it's a 1986 motor-- bought it anyhow as it said it was a thifty rebuild--fine---torn it down everything looks good, clyinders , heads no cracks etc. I also got a tranny in pieces with all new parts to rebuild it with. BUT before I do rebuild them both will I have any problems mating up these 86 parts to my 1988 bronco??? If so can they be adapted?? And where will the problems be located??
Here,s the numbers on the tranny tag----86GT---DAA--2 below that is 06--F--06 Here,s the numbers on the main body of the tranny----P--86GT--7006--ARR-16069D---F2 I see only one electrical hookup on the main body
I haven't looked under the 89 for numbers as it's at the body shop being painted .

the wiring harnesses are totally different between the 86 and 89. you should be able to use the 86 long block, just use the 89 intake and sensors. anything with wires going to it will need to be changed to the one from your 89. i hope this helps.
as for the trans, im not sure. is it a manual or auto? the manual trannys are all interchangeable, but the 2nd gen auto had different electronics if i remember correctly

It's automatic with only one electrical connection.

x2 with roadrunner. :icon_thumby:

Measure the trans lengths as the only thing I can think of that might be an issue. I know it is going from auto to manual.

Good Luck

It should all plug in. There will be a few things on the older engine that will not be used, like the knock sensor and EGR valve. Yes the harnesses are different starting in 89, but all the end plugs are the same.
