Is there a solution to the fuel tank vent issues?

I've had my truck to three different stations, at all three the gas backs up into the neck after I get maybe half a gallon in and shuts off the pump, even when I'm just barely squeezing the trigger. It takes 10-15 minutes just to get 3 or 4 gallons in the tank.

Is there some kind of a fix for this? I feel like the majority of what I've seen regarding this issue is "Oh, Rangers are just like that." I can't be driving this thing on a regular basis and have it be this hard to get gas into. I also heard mention of the charcoal canister being plugged, I pulled it off the other night but had no clue how to check anything with it so I just put it back on.

I had a similar problem on my old diesel F250 that was caused by the rollover valve on top of the tank. The fix was to gut the valve and run an external vent to the filler neck much like how these are set up OEM, and after that fix I could fill the truck at the high flow semi filler stations.

Does enlarging the vent tube make it any better?

Does this happen at only one station or all that you go to. I have had this happen at only one station and others having the same issue .I believe it is due to them not changing out their filters as much as they should.

Also it just might be time for you to replace your filler hose. Mine was starting to leak but also took forever to fill up before it started to leak. They are so much cheaper now than they used to be.

But you might want o also look under the truck and check the rubber part of the vent hose you might have a split hose.

So, I'm curious...if you pull the charcoal canister off, should you be able to blow through it easily? I did that with mine and noticed it seemed to have a fair bit of resistance.

Well, I have to do the back story. My 02 had a cold start low idle problem for I'd say about a year. Had a number to threads here on that. Anyway, it turned out to be the fuel pump. I didn't want to mess with it and a local mech said he would change the pump for 1.75 hours labor and the pump. Paid some extra to get a OEM pump.

Got it back and went almost straight to a gas station and couldn't get gas in it. Took it back a griped (figured he screwed up putting the tank back in). The guy did some testing and said the back pressure from the canister tested to high. He wanted and hour to change it. By this time I said screw it and change it. He did and it worked.

I asked for the old canister back. I played around with it and with a shop vac air went right through it. And blowing through it almost no back pressure (like none). So I do not know nutton!!!

So, my conclusion is that when the guy put the tank back in he somehow got it full of fuel (or almost full or enough full). And, it would not vent the tank. I have been told since that if I had just waited and driven it, it would have purged the fuel from it and been fine. But, I have also been told that it was bad and the mech was correct to replace it.

Ford says it is a forever part and should never fail (but all the parts housed carry them, so??).

I don't know if an 02 and an 09 uses the same part; but, for the price of shipping you can have my old one if you want it!! PM me if you do.....

Did he change just the canister or did he change the valve as well? Course I don't know what conditions the valve opens or closes under...

I saw the assembly basically just consists of the canister and valve, and some sort of a box that the hose from the valve runs through before it vents to atmosphere.

I know he only changed the canister. I also know the tank is a closed system and never vented to the atmosphere except when the fuel cap is removed.

The vent line goes from the tank to the canister and then to the top of the fuel filler tube, just below the restrictor plate. Fuel vapor is pushed into the canister from the tank and held there until the valve is opened and it is pulled into the engine through the the valve's vacuum line and burned. During refueling I think the air in the tank goes into the canister and then out the vent line.

I believe the valve is opened by the computer to create a vacuum in the tank; but, I don't know when or under what circumstance or how big a vacuum is maintained. I know the computer monitors this vacuum and turns on a dash light if you leave the filler cap off. If you remove the filler cap with the engine running (after some point) you can hear air rush into the tank.

If I say any more I will have to start making stuff up! :dunno:

Did your 02's setup look like this? Because this is how mine is, and I can't tell how it does go back to the engine if it does. Only has one hose connected to it.

The canisters for an 02 and 09 are different part numbers( they are the same from 04 through 11). They have been in the same place since at least 99. My 02 and 08 appear to be put together mostly the same way. Vent line high up on the filler tube going someplace so air can get out of tank when refueling. If you look at the filler tube you will see that it is so small there is no way the air can get out of the tank when the fuel is going in except thru he vent line that goes the the canister (when you put cap on it is no longer vented).

After you get it fixed extending the breather for the charcoal canister to the front of the truck will help prevent it from happening again. It sucks in dust (like from gravel roads) and plugs up.

Funny that this got brought up... Just tonight I was trying to reason through why my tank hasn't been filling completely lately.

I guess I'm going to check the rubber hose on the vent tube and make sure it isn't swollen shut. From there not sure what else to check...I can't find the charcoal canister for anything past an '03 anywhere. Rock Auto has one listed but it says not available.
