How to tell if truck shifts into 4x4 ?

Are you able to hear the shift motor running ,when you are stopped, and shift into 4x4. The 4hi light comes on and I hear a click but no motor sound !! so today I removed the shift motor and tore it part way apart, the stop on this one looks like a small plastic round piece in good shape. took the motor apart looked good ! will try and reinstall tomorrow. Another IMPORTANT question is it allright to drive a few miles with the shift motor and the counter weight off the truck ??? Thanks Chuck

um if you step on the gas and your front wheels are pullin too its in 4wd. i doesnt hurt to open the door and have a look see.

You wont hear the motor. If you are stationary, you will hear a slight thunk, but if you are driving, you won't hear that. But you will be able to tell, by "feel" that its in 4x4. Try turning on some gravel, you'll notice real quick....


Don't drive on the road though in 4x4....

Thanks all, but I am still not sure if it goes into 4hi,can't feel any motion of the motor when my SO flips the 4hi switch, and I was underneath the truck, but did feel a slight thud when she turned the 4 hi switch off.. I haven't been able to take it in any dirt yet ,and as stated don't want to try it on pavement, guess when I do go offroad and get the back wheels stuck in sand then Switch it to 4hi I will know if it works, but then its too late !!! was afraid to try the motor while it was off, thought maybe I would get it out of whack ! no one anwsered if I would be ok to run with the motor and weights off the truck?? Thanks for the info> Chuck
