I have a 94 ranger 4.0 automatic transmission with a bad engine, truck only has 80,000 miles. i found a couple of later model engines. 1 is a 95 the other is a 2002. how new can i go and what forseeable problems will i encounter?

Your truck will have to completely be changed over wiring wise for either engine. The '95+ vehicles are OBDII PCM compliant. There are more sensors and a different PCM than in your '94. You would have to swap wiring from the engine bay, transmission, dash, and a few other wiring harnesses. I believe the '95+ Ranger 4.0 also has a return-less fuel system where as your '94 has a return line.

The '02 4.0 is completely different in the fact that yours is a 4.0 OHV and it is a 4.0 SOHC. Wiring is completely different.

It can be done, but there is a lot of wiring for both.

You can drop the 95 longblock into your 94 and use your sensors / intake / exhaust setup and it'll be fine - no wiring changes necessary at all.

The 02 engine is a different beast entirely and as Mjones stated - a complete wiring overhausl.

was the '95 long block still a OBDI engine Bird?
