lets say, i have a front axle with a driver side drop, but i want the exact same thing but with passenger side drop, could i just switch the tubes/inner axle shafts around and it would be switched? or cut and weld a section of tube from one side to the other? it sounds easy but i'm sure is more complicated than i think. i dont have any axle to look at to visualize so the picture in my head is perfect :icon_confused:

In theory it should work just fine. Theory is a wonderful thing, reality however is a different thing altogether.

Anything can be done.

How good of a welder are you?

There is a thread on here discussing that option somewhere...

There is a member on here thats done it...............PATOV or something like that.I believe he is from CHILE.Built an awesome truck!

well, certified in stick and flux cored, but if i do it over the summer it would be inner shield welding, since that is the only welder i have. if i wait till school starts in fall i can use any welder under the sun! but my little lincoln should do fine if i bevel the tubes and everything. thanks for the replies everybody!

ive always heard to heat up the whole area prior to welding on cast but when i tig weld cast, i never had any problems or have had to re-weld. just thought id throw that out there. maybe someone who has more experience with cast can chime in.

this axel started life as a passenger side drop

all you gotta do is get the tube outa the diff and the knuckles and swap the tubes only i believe that the knuckles are specific to each side. os right tube to the left and left tube to the right but keep the left knuckle on the left and the right in the right

what would you want a passenger side diff for?

just to make sure you know, a ford front axle has reverse cut gears compared to a dodge or chevy with dont. so you cant just switch the tubes
