Cant really find any info other than on casting numbers. Just curious if X block were OE to Y truck if it would share sequential numbers from the vin somewhere stamped on the block. Trying to figure out how much previous owner tinkering has occured. Pretty sure this engine has been removed before. Curious if thers any way to tell if its the engine the factory installed, which would give me a yay/nay as to if my odo reading is in any way a helpful hint to its service life.
Thanks

Usually junkyards mark the block in some manner, or at least the ones around here do. The junkyard I usually get engines from now puts some stamped metal piece in a blob of some kind of adhesive on a freeze plug on the back of a head and circles it in paint marker. Some places just write in paint marker, usually on the back of the block or in the bellhousing area.

I have heard that supposedly the blocks have some year code cast into them in one of the lower back corners, but yeah, there is no specific vin code on the engines of the 83-11 Rangers that I’m aware of. Keep meaning to remember to grab some pictures of the sides of the block that’s on my engine stand at my buddies place…

There is a casting number along the edge of the block below the driver side deck under the exhaust manifold. Thats the only one I know of currently. Once I pull it out I'll give it a good pressure washing and look around more.
