CAUTIONS when painting Ford stock alloys w/ tires OFF?

Some guys are getting great looking results out of factory alloy rims, courtesy of nasty stripping chems, lots of labor, and the Duplicolor Corporation, lol.

My 1999 came with these 15x7s (courtesy TRS tech lib). Not something I'd buy aftermarket, but looked OK when new. There's a gray metallic paint in the *20* recesses, I guess for a "shadow" look... yep, designed by gay guys, lol.

I do NOT remember these!... TRS says they came on 1985-88 Rangers... they ROCK! These I'd pay for! Picture them with spokes totally blacked out, rims bright, like Porsche Fuchs:

Anyway, on to the gritty:

0) Will Duplicolor wheel paint melt/craze the PLASTIC center caps?

1) I assume all paint and clearcoat must be kept off the actual bead SEAT, but can coatings wrap around the lip and part way down the bead flange?

2) Can average tire shops mount new all-terrains withOUT scratching such paint jobs?

3) Will POWDERCOAT hold up to a tire install without scratching?

There is a set of these at a junkyard down here in ocala, they are all over the place. You can find them cheap as hell everywhere. The ones in the junkyard, I will prolly sell if I can get dude to let go of the entire truck. ITs an 86 or 84 4x4. I think 84 cuz its carbed. I jsut need the drive train.

idk about the just paint,
but i used about three coats of clear on my when iv painted the and have had two sets of tires so far so good.

I know its not "the right way" but If it's not too detailed painting the wheels, rustoleum works great. I know some punks around here that used it and turned out like crap(chipped, peeled, dripped) But If you prep it "the right way" it works great. Strip any existing paint, sand, blow the dust and shavings from sanding away with a air gun, and spray away

I've done it to my wheels and bumpers and it still looks great! And when I got my new tires put on, only one wheel had a tiny blemish from mounting the tires.

Froggy, I'll check my local (Ft. Laud.) boneyards before I haul off to Ocala... hope they look as good in real life... certainly more "truckly" than my wheels, or most any stock Ranger wheels, eh?

Maybe their retro-80s style won't "go" with my 4th(?) Gen Ranger? I think they will, especially with a "blackout" treatment.

I had those lower 5 spoked ones on my Ranger. I just used some sand paper to rough up the clear and get rid of the bubbly corrosion then shot it with some Tremclad semi gloss black. They looked great, Ill get a pic up. It looked sick in real life with the chromed lug nuts on black.

ck, lookin' GOOD! Chrome lugs a great touch. Just confirms MHO that Ranger wheels have gone downhill since then.

HEY, are those manual hubs? Can you post a pic of the REAR wheel, so I can get an idea...? Gotta review the bore hole issue... Thanks in advance.

My 4x4 is not so "off-roadly" (lifted), and it's ALL BLACK, so I was thinking of leaving the outer rim "silver" for a more suave, around-town winking-at-the-ladies look, lol. I will probably do the chrome lug nuts too, unless you copyrighted it.

Hey bro no prob do what you want. I liked the all black and chrome, I sold the truck a while ago and I don't know if I have any pics of the rear wheel up close. What did you need to know/see specifically about it though?

I used Dupicolor paint, 5 coats, and it stands up to everything! Swapped the tires myself at school and it stood up.

I clean it with Eagle One Rim cleaner. That stuff is pure acid and it still stands up fine.

... I don't know if I have any pics of the rear wheel up close. What did you need to know/see specifically about it though?

I guess I'm just not clear on whether I'm looking at decorative center caps or actual working hubs... no big deal, don't go digging up old photos, I appreciate the one you did post.

I'm sure all issues will be crystal clear the second I find a set of these in a local yard... yepper.

My truck is pictured to the left..yeah, it's small, not 4wd...was going to repaint the wheels that stock silver color. I have the Duplicolor WP101 Silver. What is the best prep method? I also painted the grill black, it was the stock grey color but really sandblasted. I am the 3rd owner of this truck and just doing little things. Was also considering black for the rims. Any suggestions/advice?

0- Not sure on that one, wouldnt think so.

1- You can paint the bead seat of the wheel. It wont hurt anything, some wheels that arnt cast very well come with painted beads to make sure the beads dont leak.

2- Yes, make sure they know you dont want the wheels scratched. We have two machines for doing custom wheels that the only thing that touches the wheel is the tire when it goes over the lip.

3- Powdercoat will hold up better than paint.
