Building an AR

From the Iowa DNR

Handguns: Center-fire handguns .357 caliber or larger, shooting straight wall ammunition
with an expanding-type bullet. Minimum barrel length for all handguns is 4 inches. No shoulder stock or long barrel modifications are allowed.

Yeah we can hunt with pistols during shotgun season. Has to be .375+ though.

Center-fire handguns .357 caliber
or larger, shooting straight wall ammunition
with an expanding-type bullet. Minimum barrel

stock or long barrel modifications are allowed.
Only the following center-fire cartridges may
be used: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .375
Winchester, .38 Super, .40 S&W, .401 Powermag,
10 mm Auto, .41 Remington Magnum, .41
Action Express, .44 S&W Special, .44 Remington
Magnum, .44 Automag, .444 Marlin, .445
Super Mag, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Super Mag,
.45 Winchester Magnum, .45 Silhouette, .451
Detonics, .454 Casull, .45-70 Govt., .460
Rowland, .460 S&W Mag, .475 Widley Magnum,
.475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action
Express, .50 Linebaugh, .50 Beowulf and .500
S&W Mag.

I usually carry my shotgun with my .44 on my hip anyway so not really a gain there.

Not really looking to make a pistol.

I keep forgetting but I can hunt coyotes with a .223/5.56. Never done it aside from a few potshots with a shotgun during a slow deer season.

EDIT: I see we both looked it up lol

Here is IN.

Pulled from IN DNR:
Handguns, other than muzzleloading, must have a barrel at least 4 inches long and must fire a bullet of .243-inch diameter or larger. The handgun cartridge case, without the bullet, must be at least 1.16 inches long.

7.62x39 - .308" Diameter; 1.516" case length

Yeah, things like that vary quite a bit.

AR pistol for the win!

AR pistol for the win!

For you. I have never been stopped by the DNR but with my luck if I was hunting with an AR pistol I wouldn't make it until noon the first day.

If it is legal, they cannot do shit about it. True story.

.357>.308

Not straight wall case, larger than minimum legal size or on their list of approved calibers. The smallest legal diameter pistol round legal in Iowa is a .357mag.

It just ain't legal in Iowa.

Order came in, not bad for free freight.

Also learned that moments before I ordered it my brother had ordered it on my parent's behalf for my Christmas present so they had to quickly cancel it.

It came with the standard sight pin, dentent and spring already installed. Not a biggie because for my flat top A4 style detachable sight the +.040 pin that I also ordered is more ideal. Was also impressed that somebody in shipping took the time to package like parts together. Flash suppressor and crush ring in one bag, sight parts in a second, delta ring in a third and the charging handle in a fourth. Got a decal and a cool book too.

While I was at work where the good snap ring pliers are I went ahead and assembled the delta ring assembly.

The handguards index on the barrel nut so they won't just go on until I get that torqued but here is what it is going to look like.

My suggestion is to get a low pro gas block and some flip up sights. Once those are zeroed you can zero any optic really quick.

I am just looking for a steel sight rifle. Already have three rifles with scopes, I am wanting something aside from my slug gun to shoot with steel sights.

I guess I am just not a fan of that style front sight. To each their own. Looks good. Just do not tacticool it up.

Heck no. Just a detachable carry handle sight for the rear and maybe a sling. Its going to be pretty simple/basic.

Thanks, :icon_thumby:

I am just not a fan of that front sight or a carry handle. If that is what want, then more power to you. Your money your gun.
