Building an AR

Build a 7.62x39 upper then. Ammo is cheap and readily available. I may build a 7.62x39 target upper.

They sound kinda like they are not ideal, feeding problems, harder on internal parts, special mags...

And it would still be competition with my slug gun for range. :annoyed:

So I am just going for the cheap plinker 5.56 route.

Its too bad you have to go the AR-10 to get much effective distance out of these things. Like I said it would be nice but I already have a longer distance rifle so it isn't like I am really needing one.

I have a nickel boron bcg and a chrome moly barrel. The mags are the same price as standard 556 mags. It is easier to find 7.62 x 39 ammo than 556 and costs less as well.

I would love to get an AK sometime to take care of that niche. :icon_twisted:

I will own a AK variant before I will own an actual AK. I actually have a AK variant already with my upper. I will stick with what I know best.

Most of the fun I have is learning about the different types of firearms and how they work. It is more to get an ak itself rather than another short range rifle.

This whole AR project is a learning experience for me anyway. Never been around one much.

My brother had an order going into Stag so I threw a couple things on too.

Rifle twist rate for the barrel, how big of a difference does it make? The Del-Ton barrel with the sight base I like is 1:9, but wanting a rifle that will be able to shoot heavier stuff for hunting if needed for a backup rifle I would really like a 1:7 more. Would a 20" barrel make a difference with it too?

And then chrome lining, how does it compare with nitrited, melonited and stainless?

I FINALLY FOUND THE ONE!!! :yahoo:

And then being a "store brand" barrel the first thing that came to mind was "who made it for them?" so I start doing some searching. I never dug that up but everybody seems to get a long fine with Brownelle's barrels and then I find this little nugget:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_123/663959_.html

Their involvment with customers on what they wanted was very intriguing, I like it. :icon_thumby:

It seems my cherrished version spawned out of that. Just what I wanted, 1-7, CL, 20", M4 FR, FSB (I have a question going in since it sounds like they are switching from F marked to Std on the more "correct one" which one it really has and it doesn't say on the page)

Made in USA, lifetime warrenty. Price is a little higher than the Del-ton but it should throw heavier slugs a little better too.

Got tired of Brownell's never having it in stock, went with this one instead.

They had 10% and free freight (supposed to end a week ago but it is still up on their website and it still worked) so I got all the little odds and ends for free and a charging handle. I should be able to put together a working rifle finally. :yahoo:

So you can hunt 223/556 in Iowa? Must be nice. I will be hunting with a 458 SOCOM AR and either a 300 BO or 7.62x39 AP pistol next deer season.

Heck no. Archery, shotgun, pistol and muzzleloader is all we get.

A few years ago we had a doe only season that was centerfire .24cal+. That got nixed the season after I bought a 30-06. :bawling:

I would look into what calibers you are allowed to with and build/buy an upper in that caliber.

Do they make shotgun or blackpowder uppers? :icon_rofl:

Barrel has been ordered anyway, I have had the BCG for awhile and just remembered I never mentioned that on here. .223/5.56 will do fine for punching holes in paper and a second string hunting rifle if I go abroad.

Check into your local hunting regs. I can hunt with a .30 caliber fun for an AR but in pistol form. It also does not require a Form 4 or Form 1 to the ATF. True story.
