Brake/Clutch Pedal Assembly loose

If I'm not mistaken, the one on the older Rangers was what is called a "horseshoe clip"...or horseshoe retainer.

It is just a U shaped washer with some edges cut on the inside so that the clip slides into a grove on the shaft and holds it in place from side to side movement...

The little plastic clip that holds the clutch push rod on the pedal does the same job but it has little plastic fingers that flare open and then spring back to give it just enough snugness to hold.

There are others available...I liked the idea that you were going to use a hitch pin sort of like what was on the brake pedal...it goes through a hole and snaps down over the shaft...

Any or all of these could be used...as long as they don't stop the entire shaft from swinging the way it is intended or you will get binding in the pedals...

I put the hitch pin(3/4'') on last night and tried it out on the drive to work this morning. It definitely seems to be helping but there is still a bit of lateral movement and I also wonder how well it will stay on over time. For 58 cents, I'll take the quick fix until I can find the proper part at a salvage yard or something.

Thanks for all the input guys, I appreciate all the tips. :icon_thumby:

That diagram looks more like the clutch/brake assembly on my '96, but I'm trying to fix a 2003. Do you think the same clip will work on both?

what, no thank you? lol :headbang:

This one is listed years 95 - 11 same one comes up on to 2011

I've googled several images of the assembly and found both of the images you've shared, but I've had trouble getting a "close up" of the particular black retainer clip on the right side there. The other issue is finding a replacement because I don't know the part # or the name of the part.

I do appreciate the effort though! :)

Don't most guys use a pair of vise grips for such things? :) Y R welcome

My tool of choice was a hitch clip in this case...just want the fix to last.

I should have another look at my retainer because it was a year ago that I put that together...but it doesn't look like anything I've seen in this thread so far...
