The truck we picked up (Manual, 94 4.0 4wd) Thinking...( a dangerous thing at my age):icon_rofl:

This truck has a very noisy m5od, I assumed we would just change it out because I have another. It's quiet in 4th and 5th, 3rd is extremely noisy and the gears tend to bash, when driving and up shifting.

Before we tear into the truck, we are going to check the fluid and shifter bushings. Clutch seems good. There is much less noise when the clutch pedal is held down which makes me think it could be the pilot and or take out bearings

Just wondering what you all think? The truck is at my friend's house in the Poconos, I'm not there at the moment. but plan to start in 2 weeks

I was just playing around with the transmission I have it in the shed, disconnected and removed the slave cylinder, I don't like that connector! it was hard enough out of the truck I can't imagine it doing it under the truck!

I'm sure I'll get one of those even if I don't replace all the components which I know I will but my friend is fighting me on it because he is of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mindset

Just to be sure, your other M5OD was from a 4.0l engine, the M5OD's were made for specific engines, not interchanged to other sizes.

Casting self-doubt is a good thing I suppose Ron. (silent scream) Both of my trucks have X in position 8 on the VIN.

I've not seen the VIN from the donor truck.

I'm pretty well convinced the donor eng trans in storage is 4.0 & m5, the wrecker that sold it to me. told me it was 4.0. Other than all that, can I physically measure something on the transmission or check a number? If it's wrong. I'd be in trouble and have to get the existing transmission rebuilt if it's trashed.

no you didn't ruin my weekend lol

Post a pic of the stuff in storage. Most members here can ID the engines and bell housings on sight.

Asm I was just outside doing that! funny you mentioned it! 3.5" between top bolts. No slop at all in the shifter.

That looks like a 4.0 bell to me.

The 3.0 is really wide at the top. The 2.3 has the starter on the wrong side.

I'm actually a little disappointed, I am looking for a 3.0 trans to gut.

Thank you gentleman all! It would have been a tough "egg" to swallow

" Looking for a 3.0 trans" are the internals the same?

Which brings up a question. are there any (old school?) bellhousings that bolt to Transmissions that will also Bolt to the OHV 4.0?

The internals are mostly the same but different 1 2 and 3 ratios. The trans in my truck needs rebuilt, I really like how the B2 feels running with the 4.0 and the lower 1/2/3 ratios, so it should put some pep back in the Ranger with it's over-sized tires. I figured since I already gotta tear it down to do synchros it would be nice to change to the non-4.0 gearing as well.

The 2.8/2.9 bells will bolt to a 4.0 as well. This opens up bell housings from TK and FM transmissions, and all the autos had removable bells.

Ok .. TK is in the Mustang?

No, Toyo Kogo transmissions were in early Rangers.

You are thinking of the Tremec/Borg Warner T-5s which were in lots of things, Mustangs, Camaros, S-10s, I think some of the lighter F-series had them.
