Parts to buy before 5.0 Swap

Hey guys! Just wondering what starter and flywheel and clutch is recommended, I think the late 90s v6 manual F150 will work, and I’m not sure about what Mustang parts work. Just curious what parts I should buy BEFORE so I don’t have to waste time during the project. Thank you!!

Here is a swap article, same years as yours, but he is keeping the automatic. What manual transmission are you going to use?

Why not use a Mazda 5 speed from the same late 90's f150 v6? The v6 has the same bell pattern as the 302. I would assume the v6 5 speed would hold up to a v8 if you were reasonable with it. Use the clutch, starter and all the components from the 90's f150.

Let's see if someone has used this for a swap and how they handled the hydraulic clutch components.

So all the mustang stuff should work, flywheel, starter, etc. But was the clutch in the mustang a cable or hydraulic? That might be the sticky point. Trying to mate the ranger hydraulic clutch to the cable mustang clutch.

It was cable, but that doesn't matter. The T5 was the go-to transmission for Rangers long before the M5OD. Long ago they figured out adapting an external slave cylinder to the T5. I'm thinking that there's even information in the tech library about it.

The M5OD is a good truck transmission and probably the best go-to for a 4x4 Ranger or work truck. If someone is building more of a performance sport truck, the T5 is the better transmission. Sounds like the OPs goal is probably more like a "Mustang with a bed" than a tuff truck. My plans for my first gen Ranger swap was 5.0 and T5 (or TKO) because it was definitely intended to be a "Mustang with a bed" type build.

Doesn't the T5 put the shifter in the wrong place? I thought that was a significant issue.

Not a big issue if it's what you really want to do. In stock form the Mustang T5 puts the shifter along about the front of the seat, basically it would be in the front edge of a bench seat. Not convenient if you're running a bench seat or a factory console. If you're building a bucket seat sport truck that's going to get some quick shifting, IMO it's not a terrible location. Especially if you run a short throw shifter, again IMO since I haven't actually built it myself. If you want it to come up in about the stock location, you swap the tail housing for an S-10 tailhousing.

Again, I could have sworn all of this used to be in the tech library and write-ups somewhere, but I can't find it now. All of this was common knowledge for swaps into the 83-97 Rangers back in the day, and would still apply to the later models. It wasn't really until later on that the F-150's M5OD became popular, mostly because of it's ease to find and use in 4wd configurations.

@Jim Oaks did we lose some V8 swap articles over time? Maybe stuff that was lost in the reboot? Or am I'm remembering info from a different forum thats no longer around? Back then this one did trend more towards 4wds while that one basically catered to 2wds.

We haven't lost any articles, but the only ones I can find that mention the T5 are:

If you have T5 information to add to the Tech Library, please let me know.

:( Nope that's not the information I was remembering, and even that AA information is geared more towards 4wd applications. It must have been stuff I remember from RPS, or old threads that were lost when they tried to steal the forum.

All of this T5 transmission stuff had been figured out and spelled out long ago. Everything about adapting an external hydraulic slave cylinder to it as well as what factory application fit the best. Everything on swapping tailshafts to relocate the shifter assembly. I can kind of picture all of it, but don't recall the details well enough to try to provide for the tech library.
