Tonight on my way home the camshaft gave up the ghost. 99 with 90,000 miles on it..

The twist. I replaced the camshaft complete about 12,000 miles ago as preventative maintainence. Yes, a Motorcraft part. No chirping then and none except right before the pressure dropped. Chipped and sheared teeth. Position sensor is still good.

No play in the shaft, regular oil changes with Motorcraft blend and Motorcraft filters. I don't know what to say as I did everything right.

The shaft was still bolted down tight. I even replaced the wires yesterday. :bawling:

Looking for a cheap car to make it through the winter. Going to love my 4 wheel drive sitting around a Cleveland winter. Don't have the cash for a new engine upfront either. I don't have the expertise for that either.

Engine didn't stall out, but metal bits floating around will lock it up soon.

I examined the shaft closely and didn't notice any obvious reasons. Since the engine didn't lockup, is there any change it's okay to just try replacing the shaft? Do the shavings have any chance to enter the oil system, or is it isolated? The worst that could happen is that it dies completely, but I'd like to save the money of buying a new shaft if it's futile.

Regards, Gents!

I can't help but give a bump.
Good luck,

Richard

I would go get a decently strong magnet and a new sensor assembly (the old one will do if you still have it). Turn the engine over by hand a few times, just to make sure it can still spin and nothing is gumming up the works. Also try to get a socket (should be either a 1/4" or an 8mm, don't remember) on the oil pump drive rod and make sure it still spins and the pump isn't locked up.

If all is good stick the magnet on the bottom of the oil pan, install your sensor and synchro assembly, and fire it up. If she runs drive it.

Some of the best magnets to use are from old computer hard drives. The older the hard drives the better.

They are flat and can be mounted in out of the way locations.

Another place to place one is on the oil filter. This will also trap metal particles in your filter to be removed with your filter change.

Thanks for the magnet tips! We have crazy strong Neo magnet blocks at work. I will slap them on for a bit to grab stuff.

Haven't done much till this weekend. Ended up buying a 5sp 2014 Focus for DD. Nice to have 35mpgs!

I grabbed a Duralast assembly this weekend. Cleaned everything up, removed a mouse house and installed the new piece. Drove it around the block just fine. As i pulled back in the driveway the lower radiator clamp let loose and started to leak....hose clamped it back up. Might have gotten lucky and avoided a swap/scrap heap.

Have lots to of work to do. Power steering rack has play, front bumper looks like hell and I do notice a slight squeak while revving. I have to investigate as it was hard to identify location. Belt and power steering pump are noisy. Could be the POS Duralast assembly, but I wasn't going to drop 200 on a Motorcraft assembly until I know it is okay.
