I'm trying to locate a tail shaft housing gasket and drive shaft seal for this tranny. I can find parts for the R2, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know if there is a difference. I know that most folks just use blue silicon, but I sometimes don't have good luck with it, so I would prefer to use a gasket if available. PO had used silicon before and it was leaking really bad. Also need the drive shaft seal.

Many Thanks

Looks like Timken or National 7692S is the rear (output shaft) seal.

The other seal doesn't appear to even be in a bearing a seal kit...

What kind of problems have you had with RTV? Used properly I love it. Used improperly, it makes me wanna strangle the previous user. (Often me! LOL) Might consider MotoSeal for that. It's designed for aluminum case halves and never dries. It was still fresh on my 78 Honda when it took it apart a few years ago. Warning: It's kinda expensive.

I guess the problem I have is with the "used properly" part of it. About half of my attempts end up leaking after a short time. It's my understanding that after a bead is applied and spread out a bit, that you let it set for 15 ~ 20 minutes and let it kinda glaze over before assembly. Take the mating part down to roughly half torque. Let set for a few hours then torque it down and let set 24 hours before use.

Properly to me is a minimal amount to seal the surfaces. I always assemble fully wet. Very little RTV in the gap when disassembled.

When I reassembled the transfer case the first time, it was assembled and in the truck driving in 2 hours from applying RTV. I know that's not by the book but it works.

If time allows today I'm going to put it back together. I think I'm going to try the MotoSeal this time. Would you by chance know the torque spec for those bolts? I'm guessing about 30 ' lb.

I would just get them as tight as felt comfortable with. But there are charts of torque specs by fastener size. Note that's thread size not the size of the wrench...
