Alternator wiring


That alternator needs a external voltage regulator the 1988 had the regulator internal in the alternator. You may have fried that alternator, get a schematic for your truck and the proper alternator go to the bone yard and get the right connector for a internal voltage regulator and wire it according to the schematic. If you power up whith the wiring wrong you can destroy the regulator, alternator and possibly the battery also. Make sure everything is correct before you connect the battery. If you cut the connector for the alternator plug a little long you should be able to just match wire colors. solder the wires and use shrink tubing over the splice.

The info I submitted above was from my Haynes manual. I went out and looked at the connections on my 1987 Ranger 2.9 and both cables connect with a push on connector so I can't verify the color codes.

i tried this way but when i hooked up the battery thru sparks, and the yellow and two black wires are hot and i think the two black wire spliced as one so i think the green wire is ground

Does that alternator have a internal regulator or did the previous owner add a external voltage regulator. I see field, stator, battery and ground connectors the ground goes to battery negative an add on wire to help charge the battery better, battery goes directly to battery pos that is the charge wire. Stator goes to stator on external voltage regulator the field is not used unfess you have a field terminal on the voltage regulator, On the voltage regulator is the ign wire that goes to key on hot. At least that is what I am seeing you cannot run that alternator without the voltage regulator. Unless I am missing somthing here.
 
i dont think so but the bad one has on but i dont think it is burnt out. which wire is the field wire is and i dont know which is the battery cause i hooked it up and when i was put the alternator screwed on and when i hook up the
+ and - it thru sparks like its wrong. i tried to look at google pictures to fix it but they are not simple
 
If you dont answer questions it is impossible to help. Do you have a voltage regulator for that alternator? The wires are in the way of the markings on the alternator but if you dont have a regulator it will either overcharge or not charge. You can add a regulator or get a internally regulated alternator and wire it stock. One thing for sure you will burn up that alternator if you run it without a regulator! Is that the 100 amp 7078?
 
Agreed. Unless we have some answers, it is impossible to give advice. It is relatively simple to wire in a regulator, and we can help. Just need to figure out what you have.

I am almost sure the alternator in you video is a externally regulated alternator the stock alternator for your truck should look somthing like this.http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-INDUSTR...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec2f5efe5&vxp=mtr You see the regulator mounted on the back with a 4 terminal wire connector. Yours has the bat-stat-fld and gnd the diodes are internal but it still needs a regulator to control the flow of electricity. There is a 1 wire 7078 that would make your life alot easier actually thinking of putting one on my 83 ranger when mine craps out. If it will fit?
 
That's the one I need but its expensive, I got mine for $22
