That alternator needs a external voltage regulator the 1988 had the regulator internal in the alternator. You may have fried that alternator, get a schematic for your truck and the proper alternator go to the bone yard and get the right connector for a internal voltage regulator and wire it according to the schematic. If you power up whith the wiring wrong you can destroy the regulator, alternator and possibly the battery also. Make sure everything is correct before you connect the battery. If you cut the connector for the alternator plug a little long you should be able to just match wire colors. solder the wires and use shrink tubing over the splice.
