just wanted to list what I learned doing this conversion:
first the way I did it is probably the easiest way if there truly is one,
if you intend to use the auto tranny from your donor you WILL have to make the PATS work in your truck, again this is for a 98 to 98 other years will probably be a little different
I used a 97 V8 explorer ecu to get the engine to run without PATS
you will have to remove or modify the AC coil to make room for the V8
you will need the V8 motormounts, it bolts right in with them
you will need to make a jumper for the starter wiring, my 3.0 truck had the male end coming off the fire wall, the explorer had the male end on the motor, pretty simple fix you will have the ends you need on the donor and on your old motor
you will need the front driveshaft out of the explorer
depending on what tranny you use you may have to shorten the rear driveshaft, I used a Mazda 5speed which is about 2 inches loger then the Auto and you will need at least the front section of the rear drive shaft because it is bigger on the V8
the exhaust fits just ok it hangs a little lower then I would like but it works for now
I installed the complete running gear from my donor which had 3:73 8.8 posi with disc brakes in back, they have a very good write-up on how to convert the rear to work in a ranger, everything else just bolted in
probably the biggest pain for me was the hydraulic clutch, I still don't have it bled out perfect, I used a clutch master from a ranger of course and a slave for the F150 tranny, the problem is the ranger male disconnect and the F150 slave female disconnect are different, they don't look different but the are, so I had to put a F150 male hose on the ranger master, I had to use a hot hot blower like a hair dryer, that was a definate hurdle I hope the master doesn't go bad on me too soon,,lol
I have read that you need to change the brake master when installing the explorer rear discs, I didn't and the are working great, they do help and were worth the effort
there is alot more to this then I can type down so if anyone has any questions of any kind either post here or email me directly I will help any way I can, just fyi the truck is a dream to drive and I am gettingaround 20 mpg's with itwhich is only a mile or two less then the gutless 3.0
