98 mountaineer 5.0 into 98 Ranger

i ran the 3.0 pump for a year.if yours is an ffv then the v8 pump is no better. but you may need to disconect the hose on the intank regulator

yes the Mountaineer has a 8.8 tractionloc in it and yes I am going to put it and the rear springs in my Ranger,,, this may sound silly but what is ffv? Will it be obvious which I have? I am going to dig into that this afternoon after the bulkhead fitting comes, I have plenty to do,,,lol,,,thanks,Neil

well I got it cranking, got spark, but no fuel so I think Stranger was right I need to deal with the Pats crap, I wonder what would happen if I installed a seperate circuit to power the fuel pump, wonder if it would bypass the pats and run normally, any thoughts?,,,,Neil

either, install pats and key reader with mountie key.or get a 97 pcm and rewire ac for wot control since the 97 has an external wot relay

I am going to get a 97 PCM, I don't have ac so that shouldn't be an issue. I found a used pcm localy so I'm off to get it this morning,,,thanks,Neil

its alive! many thanks to Stranger for pointing me in the right direction,

be safe and enjoy.let your experience help others that try a swap.you did that pretty quick

anybody know where the VSS is located on my 98 Ranger, tranny won't shift and I have P0500 and P0707 codes, everything I have read says it is on the right side of the tranny but it's not, I checked both trannies the 3.0 and the 5.0, I thought I was home free, backed it outta the garage put it in drive pulled out on the street and the stupid thing won't shift outta first, it doesn't even try, I guess I need to check the TPS also, I'm pullin my hair out here, plus driving my 78 F250 4x4 390 is killin me,,,lol,,,Neil

its in the rear.then runs thru the abs.there should also be a oss on the trans tail or t case.you may need to reset abs and pcm by removing battery cables and grounding pos cable.

I wonder if the fact that the Mountie had 4 wheel abs and the ranger only has rear is causing the conflict? Do you think I will have to put the abs stuff from the mountie on my ranger? boy that would probably be a blast. One other thing I don't know if I mentioned, when I put the truck in reverse I hear a relay clicking sound behind the instrument panel, I believe the shift relay is there somewhere, maybe a conflict there...thanks,,,Neil

no its more than likely the 97 pcm. the trans/vss wiring is slightly different on 98+.your best bet would be adding pats and using the 98 pcm.did you try resetting pcm/abs/ gem by grounding pos cable?

yes I did, so instead of trying to change parts referenced by the trouble codes I got you would move the pats junk to the ranger. I guess all it will cost me is time....Neil

just an update FYI, I got my tranny shifting by unhooking the tranny range sensor, I suspect as stranger said before that there is a conflict in the 96 pcm being hooked up to a 98 tranny via 98 wiring harness, I am going to transfer the pats from the mounty soon if I can't resolve the conflict any other way, I need to get some 96 wiring diagrams and compare to see if there is a way by changing some wires, at least I can drive it now and it actually works fine this way and I seem to be getting pretty close to the same mpg's as the 3.0, the truck is a joy to drive , Ford really should have built one this way...Neil

good find, the helms evtm will give you a better understanding.thanks for the heads up. next time i tell someone to use the non pats pcm, that there is a trans control conflict. last guy that i told to use a 96-97 pcm had a 2wd w/3550 manual trans .he saw no trouble.
