I have a 93 Ford ranger 4.0 that cranks but won't start.do you have any suggestions what I can do to figure it out I counted the cel and received codes 556 but I'm positive the fuel pump is coming on when trying to start.

Get a can of starting fluid.

Remove air filter, spritz a bit of fluid into the intake, try and start motor.

If it fires, you have fuel system issues. If it doesnt, you have ignition system issues.

Yup. Do what blmpkin said. It's called the 50/50 test because it rules out 50% of the possibilities.

You need 3 things to make the engine run. Fuel/air mix, spark and compression. Figure out whether the problem is fuel or spark. You can deal with compression later if it's an issue.

So how do I figure out the spark problem an any idea why the only code that comes up is 556.

I can share electrical diagrams and a few ideas later this evening.

Ok. Attached are some electrical diagrams that may be pertinent. The first one, page 21-4 is probably the most important.

It seems you don't have spark. So, we need to see if you have voltage to the coil with the key turned on. That is the red wire with light green stripe at the ignition coil. We also need to verify power to the pcm power relay in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. More info at the left side of page 26-1. And we need to verify 12 volts (with key on) on the red wire at the ignition control module. That module is mounted on the radiator support just inboard of the driver side headlight. Also check your ground connections on the radiator support near the driver side headlight.

It acts like it will start when you first turn it over like you can hear it almost start but just the first time. All other attempts after that are cranking that's it.

how much starting fluid? the pump primes like normal for sure?

look careful at the pcm grounds at the battery.... that code is odd if the pump is strokinh

So would you think it is a wiring issue or what
556(O,M) Fuel pump relay primary circuit fault – Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

565(O) Canister Purge 1 solenoid/circuit failure – Solenoids

566(O) transmission 3/4 shift solenoid/circuit – Transmissions

629(O,M) Torque Converter Clutch circuit fault – Transmissions

Starting to look like a loose ground connection somewhere.
