4x4 issue. 94 Explorer XLT

As always, you guys help me out when my truck decides to have it's moments... Figured I'd ask here first...

94 Explorer XLT 4x4 BW1354E Auto Hubs M5OD 4.0

When driving it sounds like something is making a notable humming noise in my front end. It made this sound once before when I turned the front shaft by hand and partially engaged the hubs. Sound goes away when I put it in 4x4 Hi, but then I get a random clunking coming from somewhere in the front end when in 4x4....

Anyone ever have this experience before?

Thinking I may have to hit up the mechanic tomorrow. Any ideas so I can go in knowing a little bit?

You said auto hubs? They crap out all the time, they hum click and clunk.
