I have a '02 XLT 4x4 with 230K miles, this summer it has developed a timing chain rattle (chatter), and I want to nip it in the bud. This is my first 4L SOHC vehicle. My last ford was an '85 F150 with a 300 6 and 310k miles on it when it died, but that's another story...
I have a few questions before I get started.
Do I need to replace the sprockets, or just get the chains and tensioner kit?
And which kit(s) are best? I don't mind paying extra for quality.
And, is the "Cam service kit" (https://www.amazon.com/OTC-6488-Ford-SOHC-Service/dp/B000F5ED12?tag=959media-20) necessary?? I'd hate to spend that much for a tool I might only use once if it's not necessary.
Of course I'll also put in a new oil pump, seals and gaskets, etc., and check the bearings. it dosen't use any oil or smoke so I don't plan on pulling the heads.
Is there anything else I should know? I understand that the 4L SOHC motor is a different animal from the OHV engines I'm used to, Any advice would be appreciated!
