4d55 turbo diesel info

Other way around. The frame is almost cut in half by rust on one side on the green one (picture at night) not to mentionned the box is like a swiss cheese and the cab is sitting on the frame. I can see through the floor on the passenger side just like the flintstone's car.

The black one has a lot of bling bling i will throw away but she's a solid truck and already have a 3 inch body lift. I've bought used goodyear duratrac in 31. It's sitting on skinny winter tires right now.

Also: I've read on another forum about bigger turbos. One guy said, well i'll quote him, tell me what you think

For turbos a lack of boost is what causes high EGT's. Anything you do in an attempt to reduce turbo backpressure (i.e. bigger turbo or bigger exhaust housing) will reduce boost and increase EGT's.

To get EGT's down you need a smaller exhaust housing to spin the compressor harder and generate more boost.

??? I tought it was the other way around? Like i said before, i'm new to turbo diesel stuff, but generally, guys open things up to get a better flow, At least, on gassers.

You put a bigger turbo: It spools slower than a small one cause it needs more air to do so. But once it does you got a lot more air flowing and a lot more pressure. If you got a good p-flow and an unrestricted exhaust the limit sits on the volume of air your intake and valves can flow? And the pressure the head can handle (head gasket, head studs, etc?

How do i calculate the 4d55 head flow limits?

This is a bit what i was saying about the internet. I read a lot like you do, but once in a while i get conflictual informations that gets me thinkin... What if that one guy was right? So it's ok for a starting point but i'll have to do the maths by myself.

Here's the conversation i came across. And seems that the guy that i've quoted got a lot of posts on that forum. Not saying the number of posts means alot, but at the very least he's been around for a long time....

Listen to Dougal... He knows what he is talking about. :icon_thumby:

no yeah dougal is exactly correct. because a bigger exhaust housing will take so much longer to spool the compressor, it will result in higher egts UNTIL SPOOLED. once it is fully spooled the running temp at spool will be lower than that of a smaller exhaust housing because you are moving more air at a faster rate causing the temp to be lower than a smaller one (if that makes since hahaha) its kinda hard to explain but essentially just as dougal said... a larger exhuast housing + smaller compressor wheel = slower spool + more boost at spool and smaller exhaust housing = faster spool with less boost at full spool. its almost like the fuel to air ratio in every engine. everyone is always trying to find that sweet spot of a mixture haha. basically you want the air moving as fast as possible without being channeled through such a small opening it gets restricted. intake head gaskets studs exhaust size all of those can be restrictors. thats why i thought the t3 turbo would be perfect especially after turning up the pump because when the engine is lugging (more fuel than air) egt's go up so when you turn up the fuel you have to turn up the air or youll blow. and the t3 has a pretty good exhuast housing to compressor wheel "ratio" if you will.

also thanks a ton on the stuff for the fsm's and yeah ill have to check that belt situation out. it might be becoming more of a road cruiser after the swap. who knows.

you gotta check out fawk_awph's 4d55 ram 50 build on pirate4x4 haha its crazy sweet here are some links:

mmh, not in the mood to check the entire post right now. Mine will remains stock (except for the intercooler and boost controller). I got plenty to think about right now, including: find a new job:sad:

Oh well...

Yeah, it's tough. I don't know what are your plans for the future. but don't mess too much with the bottle, funny cigarettes and stuff while you're at school. (You know, you really don't have to listen to me, i'm just saying what i'd do if i could go back in time!!!) If your hobby is wrenching on cars and you enjoy it, it's a healty way to devellop yourself. Getting drunk every nights won't earn you shit. Dead end jobs and low wages. Being "cool" isn't a goal in life..

Just sayin...

I'm just laid out for a month or so, maybe i'll start the swap even with the last bits of snow and the cold days. It's not too bad, we are in the -4 degrees celcius.

i want to build a 4d55 raider now.....

bastards.....why did you show me that:thefinger:

Do it! you have way more raiders and monteros in the states then up here. I've had 4 of them (including that gold one, wich was on a farm most of it's life and rust free) This is a swap that needs no fabrication. Just fooling around a bit with the oil pan and oil pick up tube. the mitsu gas 4 banger shares the same block with the 4d55.

the gas 2.6 is known to have a weak head, so it's easy enough to find one with a blown head gasket for a couple hundreds. i've bought that gold one that way.

The reason i didn't look into it this time is that i want to put a camper on my diesel truck and make it into a cheap road trip rig.

oh yeah i hear ya eric im actually starting college next year (my senoir year in high school) to get my welding degree (ill be earning high school and college credits for it) and then going to wyotec for advanced heavy diesel tech. i want to land a job with wagner or deere. but i mean i party with my friends on the weekends and stuff few beers here and there not an every day/night thing though. -4*C?!?!? damn where are you at??? haha in colorado weve been having like 50*F+ days for about a week but right now its not even 20*F and pissing snow haha

Do it bobby!! haha they are swapped into Raiders quite often actually from what ive seen

I'm doing the same swap in the same year truck 1994 Ranger 4x4 Super cab. You do not need to lengthen or shorten drivelines. Engine mounts are obsolete, I'm using 4.0 engine mounts. Wiring is pretty easy, you can can make it as complicated as you want (I plan on electric fan, momentary glow plugs, OHC install, electric seats... etc) But as far as getting it in there and running, not bad at all. I'm still waiting on a few parts to continue. I haven't started a build thread, but I will soon. I'd get one engine, as complete as you can. Most engine related parts are easy to source.

I say goforit! Here is the truck I'm swapping the 4d55 into.

wich transmission do you use?fm-146? and where do you get your parts from? How do you modified the 4.0 motor mounts to fit? The motor mounts are the last things i need figured out about the swap. looking forward to see your build thread. Nice clean looking truck!

Mason, i'm in Quebec, Canada. winters here lasts about 6 months, freakin'country! But we learn to live with it. Great for snowshoeing and skiing!

hey Oh2 shot you a friend request so we can put our heads together in this swap incase someone gets stuck haha sent you one too eric but i have the same questions as eric! where are you finding parts? what trans? what do you plan a making the truck for? whats your plan for the fan? toggle switched or tapped into the thermostat? if in the therrmo what temp would you set at? Also what time lap do the glowplugs run at? i head they were fast and hot and only need a second or so with a block heater? and btw crazy nice 2nd gen i wish mine was that green!! love it!!

Ill try to go into greater detail tomorrow If I get the chance, about to head out for sat night :headbang::beer:

Answer a few questions though:

FM146 all the way, it's not the greatest transmission ever, but better than the 145 and about par in my mind with the TK5. It is the same length as the M50D, so if you had a M50D a FM146 is a drop in affair .. reverse lights and neutral sensing switches and all. - so your dive lines are unaffected.

Parts I've found all over, depends on what exactly your looking for. As far as seals/gaskets... they are everywhere. You only really run into issues with the belt drive system and mounts. Everything else is fairly easy to come by.

Glow plug times differ, the stock system did use super quick 6v glow plugs they heated up very quickly. I have 12v plugs (they take a little longer, but much less apt to burning them up on a momentary switch.. the safety was worth it to me if I was gonna be the guy behind the switch.

The electric fan is gonna be a Taurus fan thermostatically controlled when reaches a certain temp, but I will also have a bypass on/off switch in the cab to bypass the unit and engage the relay for the fan. (in case the unit ever fails, or I think the fan should be on and it hasn't come on yet)

Oh and thanks for the comments on the truck.. it will soon also have a new front clip after all said and done... another beer icon for that! :icon_cheers:

I don't know where you sourced your engine, but the stock ranger glow plugs set-up works on 12v. I checked with a voltmeter and i have the diagram. i changed the glow plugs cause i had one fried. The oem system doesn't need much to get back to use. The ecu has to be opened, you have to remove the card and clean carefully. i had a spider livin' in there and some rust. i used a q-tips, alcool and a 400 sandpaper. An old mechanic i know use to drive those trucks alot and told me the relays never went bad on his trucks, it's always rust or durt in the ecu( they're not sealed and at the passenger side near the floor.)

The pre glow last about 5 seconds, the only way i can tell is that i ear the loud click from the relay. After start glow, i can't really tell, can't ear shit with that straight pipe!!!

the glow plugs i used are ngk y-115t1. got them from rockauto for 10$ a piece. They work fine. In the rockauto catalog, you have to go by part number cause they're not listed for the diesel ranger (you can get spark plugs for it,tho:icon_confused:) I ordered my timing belt kit and clutch kit at the same time. timing belt and glow plugs came from uk.

They also carry reman injectors. I will probably change them later on.

I ordered fuel and oil filters there too, but i bought the last 2 oil filters at 20$, they now want close to 40. I've located a source in uk and i think i'll order a bunch of those. carparts4less i think.

Mason, try to talk down the price of those engines, i think it's already a good deal, but if you already have the 400$ in your pockets, I'd meet with the guy and make an offer. Sometimes it works. I know when i sell something, i'm always shopping around for something new so when somebody comes with cash in hand, i tend to lower my expectations a bit just to get things moving. I know not everybody is the same, but you never know until you've tried!

oh gotcha yeah i excpect taurus fans they are commonly swapped into a lot of stuff. i might have to do that as well especially because these things enjoy over heating haha. i need to figure out wether my trans is a 145 or 146 i dont really know. but is the 145 the same length as the m5od as well? same shafts/ u joint? and eric i dont really have it "in hand" haha im waiting on a pay check and tax returns hopefully ill have the 400 by like the 1st im just spending my money before i get it hahaha always do
