2.9 and 4.0 bellhousing bolt pattern


No, not exactly.

the 2.9 and the 4.0OVH are exactly the same

On the 4.0SOHC ONE bolt hole has been moved (but if you ignore that one bolt the bellhousings will still mate either way)

but would you want to only use 5 bolts? i would think that would not be the best of ideas
 
Up till mid 64 ford only used 5 bolts on the 289 engines, same size bolts as used in the 6 bolt bells.

Don't think it would be a real issue if you missed a bolt.

Not true. When i put the M50D-R1HD (out of a '03 FX4 Level II) in my '97 4.0 OHV, EVERY bell housing bolt matched up to the 4.0 OHV; that means that a 2.9 and the SOHC are the same.
