I have a 97 Ford Ranger with the 2.3 and manual trans. Whenever I go to stop at any time the motor starts to stall and tries to idle at around 400 to 500 rpm's then jumps back up. It also has trouble shifting back into gear if I pull it out of gear at a dead stop, with the clutch still pressed in. I am leaning towards the clutch going bad, but the clutch pedal feels perfectly fine which would make me think its something else. I ran a smoker through the vacuum lines at the EVAP system and it didn't leak smoke anywhere except at the IAC valve at the vent, which is normal. Is there something I'm missing?

I think your clutch needs bleeding. Have you checked the fluid? Make sure the black rubber gasket stays with the lid....the first time I looked at a fluid clutch system like these the gasket was sucked into the master and once filled never leaked again. It took me awhile to figure out my mistake.

Does it idle rough with the trans in neutral? If so its not a clutch. If it's still idling rough in neutral it sounds like you could ether have a vaccum leak or a bad Idle air control.

As i said, i ran a smoke test and there arent any vacuum leaks but it could be the IAC i guess. With it shifting roughly at a dead stop makes me think it could be clutch related though
