I poop in the furnace.
I'm not ashamed to admit I suck with carbs. This was just dumped on me. It's a pinto but it's a 2.3 so figured you guys would be useful.

The guy says he can get the engine to fire up and idle but it sputters and dies out if you give it any gas. So I'm just giving it a once over before digging into it. Two things pop out right away. 2 gizmos on the carb that aren't connected. First one looks like it was suppose to have 2 coolant lines on it? Second looks like an egr valve on the intake? Wtf are they, what do they do.

1. Adjusts idle mix based on radiation level from your dilithium chrystals

2. vacuum operated flux capacitor regulator

sorry. I really don’t know

This was as good as my guess! This engine is about as simple as they come and all the basics look good (plugs, wire, timing belt, etc) so I'm fairly certain it's something wrong with this carb.

I actually like your guess on the get part. The first looks like it’s using coolant temperature and vacuum to adjust something. Might be smog stuff that isn’t really necessary

WAG;
1) choke operated by rad fluid instead of exhaust heat riser.
2) manifold vacuum operated egr.

Was this a serious answer? I cant tell anymore lol....

The thing that looks like an egr doesn't hook to the exhaust in any way, doesn't even have a place to put a pipe from the exhaust manifold? Is there a port in the head or something that routes exhaust to that side?

The choke thing makes sense and could be an issue if its stuck shut and not opening when the engine warms up.

He’s right... it’s an egr valve.
He’s right again... it’s a coolant controlled choke.
IIRC, that choke was only used until ‘77 (but what do I know... I wasn’t even born yet.)

Well I'll try and hook the egr up, and see if I can just wire tie the choke open. Its somewhere to start.

In a v8 there is a crossover passage between exhaust manifolds that runs thru the intake manifold under the carb mounting. There is a port that taps that passage. The port has mounts for the egr. Sometimes its a plate that sits between the carb and manifold that has the egr port mount, depends on where the crossover is. I used to block the passage when building a engine for racing to try to keep the carb cooler. Sometimes the passage was blocked off with exhaust gas residue.

The egr needs vacuum to operate at idle and cruise. WOT it should be off. Pick a vacuum port that does this, I believe manifold vacuum is the one.

Yea that's how I was thinking it had to work since theres no pipe/tube connecting to the exhaust manifold. this engine was pieced together so theres no way of knowing if the port is in the head or not. I'm just gonna hook it up and go from there. I'm thinking the choke is probably more to blame here if its constantly at full choke it obviously ain't gonna wanna do anything when you give it gas.

Try this
Engine key OFF
Open throttle quickly while looking inside the top of carb
You should see gasoline squirt out into the throat, that's the Accelerator pump working

In second picture, the accelerator pump can be seen to the left of EGR valve it is attached to the side of the carb with 4 screws
It has an arm in the center that should be sticking out a bit and its not, thats the pump arm that is pulled in when you open the throttle, and thats what squirts out the gasoline for "acceletration", hence the name accelerator pump

If this is not working then the engine will hesitate and stumble when throttle is opened because the Main Jets can't respond quick enough with the extra fuel needed

Where do you plug the OBDII scanner into that thing?
